I know quite a bit about cars. As far as working on cars and the specific components of an engine, not so much. I know it's been asked a lot, but what should I do first to a 95' GSX? After the repairs...which are, very small head gasket leak, not so small valve cover leak, broken driver side exterior door handle, and disconnected speedometer wire. Oh and I already have an aftermarket air filter.
The head gasket: I'm going to get a cooper head gasket and taking it too a shop.
Th valve cover: I am simply going to put two gaskets on it and and push it on there.
Door handle: I can live with it.
Speedometer: The iphone speedometer app works great.
Tune, gauges(what gauges should I even get?), boost controller, BOV,...what first?

First and foremost how are you going to explain to a cop " my iphone said I was only doing...mph".

OK just getting a "head gasket job" is no simple task, It will require taking all of the timing components off and so I would go ahead and get all new timing components that way when you get it put back together it will be that much more dependable. Depending on why and how the head gasket is bad in the first place could also mean getting the block and head resurfaced, be prepared because it might be a short lived fix if they are needing to be done.

As far as gauges go, for now, all you need is a boost gauge.

I see you said you have an after market air filter. Is it just an air filter or an entire intake pipe to the turbo? Is there a hose going back to the blow off valve from this new intake pipe? If there is not than you are losing already metered air and can make for rough driving conditions and is not healthy for your motor.

The valve cover only needs one gasket because it is a rubber strip that seats inside the actual valve cover and will NEVER require more than one.

OK......I see your a new comer to the dsm world and especially this site. Before anyone else has the chance I will tell you WELCOME. I will also tell you everything you are asking can and will be found on this site and now that you know how to find the forums.. use them!! Search for all of your questions FIRST.

Also visit www.vfaq.com to learn all kinds of things about your car. Great site!

I was EXTREMELY mistaken in something I said previously. It is the oil cap that is leaking on to the valve cover. I have read that this is a common problem and can be fixed by replacing the gasket in the oil cap and/or adding an additional gasket.

well welcome!

well my question to you is why a copper head gasket?

from what I have learned here there seems to be about 4 popular head gasket choices that have been proven to work.
2 are MLS head gasket- the OE Mitsu the other is the Cometic and then 2 composite head gaskets-the OE mitsu and the felpro

all will recommend going to ARP head studs.

being that your a 95 you should be a 2g with the 11mm head bolts that are TTY.

Ill chime in more when you get closer to doing the HG.

zatomz pretty much covered it but like he said I would highly suggest doing the timing componenets when the head is off. Might as well replace and fix everything at once instead of having to go back later and do it.
