Thanks, I guess I dont have to worry about rain, I was driving through the middle of town today and all of a sudden a downpore and my engine was fine, the filter is wet, but my engine didnt seem to mind at all. And and my friggen winshield wiper flew off and now my god damn windshield is all scratched to ####!!!!!!!!!!!1 DAMNIT

you WILL have to worry about rain. i had my filter there on my AWD and i would avoid the rain.. got stuck in it one day and teh car seemed fine.. ok so rain didn't hurt it.. got stuck in the rain a couple more times, didn't think anything of it.. go out to my car one day after i had driven it like 2 miles in the rain (skies had cleared up already) and car wouldn't start.. i took off the MAF and poured about 1/2 a pint of water out, the MAF was toast

Ouch dave thats scary, My car needs a bath so when it gets one Im gonna drop the filter and take a look, ill get back to ya, hopefully the cardboard inside the maf aint toasted OMG

Hey mike1992, what did you use as the coupler for the tb to the intake pipe? I am going to get a k&n filter and the piping this week and need a list of all my supplies. Thanks!

Thats where the 2.5" to 3" Coupler reducer came in. I got mine off ebay. I had to trim the 2.5" side a little, because the throttle body's inner diamator is 2.5 with the added lip its a little bigger, maybe 2.75" You might be able to get away with another 3" regular coupler cut in half. :thumb:

the 2.5 coupler should fit. The one that i originally had was only 2.5 but if you play with it for alittle while maybe use a flat head screwdriver to help wedge it on. Once it gets going on, its nice and snug, plus you dont have to worry about leaks. I with i had the nice injen piping, but i dont feel like paying all that much. Mike1992 do you get the psss sound when you shift gears? i dont which i thought it would have...do you thinks its because of the mas sensor thats restricting the air from flowing in? I was thinking about one day going with a S-AFC and a second gen MAS sensor, b/c its more open and lets more air in, plus you can get away with a nice smaller filter comapred to the huge filter surrounding the MAS.

Matt

I have a constant pssssssssssssssssssssssssssss noise and when I turn the car off I get psst. Its not really loud though. But you can really hear the engine sucking through the mas when you down there. ;) By no means do i see the need for upgrading to a bigger MAF the 1G Non-Turbo maf will never be maxed out by us. However if you'd like a change Punishmentracing.com just came out with a Maft setup for us. As for my im happy and things will stay like they are until i get all my turbo components rounded togeather. :thumb:

Well i guess i cant hear it b/c i'm not down by the filter and i dont have someone giving it gas while i'm over there. But once i'm driving and the car hits around 4500 RPM's it makes a nice loud deep tone, u can really hear the thing sucking in the air and the car pull harder. I always thought of going turbo with my car this summer, but as of now i decided to stick with my car being non-turbo. Because of college and work i dont have the time to do the setup or maintain the turbo idea. I do have intentions of doing nice upgrades to this car and getting it up there, making it a very fast non-turbo car. if i find the right place, i might get a valve angle job done, replace the pistons/rods and put in turbo cams, and upgrade the fuel system. Hopefully after college i'll save up and buy a stock 2nd gen eclipse turbo car to have as a second car and something new to play with.

looking at yours again it may not be as bad as mine. mine went into the wheel well from the side, so the water would collect in the MAF and in the pipe on the other side of the MAF, since yours is oriented downwards it shouldn't collect as much, but it will still be sucking up the water... i think the collection of water may be what killed mine more than jsut sucking water through it

When mine was like yours Mike. It also made a constant "psss" sound. At idle and when I turn off the car. And I can hear it suck in air when on the throttle too, plus when I shifted. After awhile of driving. And my car sat over night. The car took awhile to start up. It is just due to the moisture and water. WHen I turbo'd my car. I thought about making a custom CAI setup for the turbo. But I read some bad stories about it so I passed.

mike, i may have missed it, but in your one pic you can see the filter in the passenger side wheel well hanging in front of the tire. did you put the plastic gaurd or whatver back in there? i definitly wouldnt want my filter hanging there to get beat up by stones from the tires and stuff.

how did you extend the MAS wiring and the connector that goes into the filter? or did the stock setup reach the whole way down. im looking into doing this ...right now i have a polished aluminum intake set up from honda civic on my 91 talon. also ....do u happen to know what degree elbows you used?? also...anyone know where i can get the AEM bypass valve thingy that keeps the water out, cuz thats the last thing that i need is water in my engine and the thing crapping out on me....please let me kknow...thanks

matt :talon:

ok...well ill look into it...but also...how did u or wat did u use to cut a whole in the fender thing...did u jes use a huge ass drill bit and drill a huge whole? or how did u get that pipe down there?

damn....i dont have access to air tools llike that...do u have any suggestions as to how i can get that 3 inch hole w/o the air tools or wat ever?

The metal is pretty thick in that area, so your gonna need something powerful yet small to get in that little area and cut away. I cut what I could and beat the rest back with a chisel and hammer and sprayed it down with a durable bed liner material to prevent rust. I dremel might do it, but its prolly not powerful enough, but its worth a go.

hmmmm.....this is a problem..i really want to do this ...but like i said i dont reallly have those kinda tools....i already have the intake pipe and one rubber coupler soo all i wood need is the 3 bends and 2 more couplers...also do u think that i shood get the k&N filter do to the metal mesh around it , cuz i have the fram filter now, no metal stuff around it...what wood u suggest? or where did u get that blue filter?

Your first mistake was getting that POS Ebay intake that doesnt fit worth a damn. (I had one I know) Go out to the hardware store buy a 3 foot long 3" pvc tube and 3 3" PVC elbows, and 3 3" Rubber Couplers. Cut the 2 elbows to fit with a hack saw and glue the system togeather.

THe filter that came with that ebay intake isnt usable with the MAS, you have to buy somethign that works, a K&N $40 at your local Pep Boys, or I found my Accel on Ebay for $32 shipped.

All in all its not hard when ya think about it, just do it

Well mine has been on for about a week or 2 now. It is doing fine. I cut back a 3" coupler and used part of the stock pipe to fit the tb. It looks real nice and works great. I cut the hole with a die grinder too but found no need to remove anything. I just took off the clips on that wire harness and pulled it up and away for the cut. I hacked the air can to use the rim for mounting the new air filter, but here is where I tried something different. I still have my k&n in the box, I just used the stock air filter again. It is working fine and being totally exposed I don't see what the difference would be. There is no way I am flowing more air than that filter can handle. I hope I can get ahold of a digicam and get some pics up. As for the rain, it has been raining alot lately down here. I do my best to try and avoid puddles. The car runs fine, no cel at all, and the filter gets wet, from splashes I guess, but nothing enough to cause problems. It has been dry for a couple days and it is still fine. :laser:
