Yeah it is, plus there is less maintenance to deal with. Just get a good clutch and lightweight flywheel and you're good to go.
 
The only expensive part of the manual is sourcing all the parts to swap it in, getting a manual ECU and then praying it doesn't break (if you repeatedly abuse your car).
 
No need for a manual ecu, auto ecu's are no different. Autos are more expensive to rebuild and require more maintenence. I'm not saying the swap would necessarily be cheaper than the rebuild but it could be depending on where you find the parts.

Manual transmission can take a lot of abuse. Especially if it's built right, unlike a auto transmission that would need a more thorough rebuild when it's damaged. Also you don't need a manual ecu and a 5 speed swap is actually pretty cheap, you just need to get a parts car or locate the parts from a part out car.
