new alternator came today. what next?

My 150 amp alternator just got here today. I was told by someone they think I should runa 4 gauge wire directly from the bolt on the alternator to the positive terminal. Should I do this? Will it help with power flow and have less of a strain on the alternator?

No. Just hook it up normally.

I'd be hesitant to just install it, however I don't have experience with higher capacity alternaters. From an electrical standpoint, the stock wires were not designed to handle 150A. The stock alternators are only 75A. Additionally, the stock fusible links are only rated for 80A, if I remember correctly.

If you have something that actually demands a constant 150A from the alternator for a long enough period of time, you could potentially melt the stock wires if they are not sized properly. A larger wire has less resistance which will result in less heat dissipated for a given amount of current. If you don't really need more than say 90A, you should be okay with the stock wires.
