need to replace my right rear hub on my 97 tsi awd

I need to replace my right rear hub on my 97 tsi awd, the shop cant get fit me in for two weeks. I have the part and want to do it myself.

How hard is this? and right now i only have the jack that came with the car, do i need any more or will that do? any tips or advice would be great. just wondering if this is a good newbie job.

Not a good newbie job. Let a shop do it. More then likely your wheel bearing will be seized in their and you will have to take it to a shop anyway to have them get your axle out. A "flat tire jack" or scissor jack wouldn't cut it for me.

Well for what your going to pay a shop probably $200-$300 for a wheel bearing change. You can probably go purchase a decent jack and stands from local parts store. Youll also need some air tools. 1/2" drive impact and I believe its a 32mm socket. After that its your basic hand tools. Basically your need the same things required for a CV axle swap.

I just jacked mine up to take a look as I didnt feel like messing with it. I already have the tools and after getting quoted $140ish on the parts plus $175-$225 I said well I think Ill DIY

I replaced the rear driver's side hub as my second DIY project (first was BOV).
Get a jack and a few jack stands. I actually got my set from Wal*mart.

Sears has a set for $40. 2 1/4 ton jack and stands.
For an impact wrench, you'll want a good 1/2" one. Sears has some OK ones in the $70 range.
When you get a compressor, buy the best you can afford. The one I have is too small. It works, but only in short bursts. It's only 1 hp and 3 gallons.
I you can buy a 32mm socket from an auto parts store for about $11.
You'll also want a breaker bar.

As long as you can get your axle out of the hub, it's not that hard of a job. You do have a regular set of sockets and wrenches, right?

yea, i have full sockets and all the goodies except breaker bar and impact wrench. maybe i will take the wheel off and poke around.

hey guys, my old hub got seized onto my rear right axle, I am having a really hard time finding another for my awd tsi manny. the next closest one in a scrapyard is 3500 miles away for 140 plus tax and shipping.

I noticed that most parts places have front axle/cv but i haven't seen one rear axle anywhere.
does this mean that they are universal from front to back, or is it just a rare part?

No problem glad I could help had same problem trying to find just the bearing for mine turns out they stopped selling them separate had to get full Assembly.

Its crazy just trying to find the bearing, mine crapped out and i had to do the same, luckily the local scrapyard had one, but on the way to the shop to replace it i heard a new light thumping.
mechanics said they didnt want to try and get the axle nut off cause there was alot of rust( they didnt want to ruin my axle incase i couldnt find one) and now i cant find one. now i don't mind so much tearing my axle out myself.

I checked in store and napa has no listing for it, i have not tried craigs list yet though. hopefully that yields results. im going to check the part outs too, i think i saw one on here a while back.

+2 rear hubs are a needle in a haystack. Be careful I ordered one 512136 Falcon brand off ebay it says it fits both GS and GSX models. I was leary and ordered anyways for like $60.00 and was going to press it into the hub but guess what... it doesnt fit the awd. ONLY fwd NT cars.

518-121 BCA should be the correct part number for the hub assembly Oreillys can get them for $140ish

as much as i want to post it the CAPITAL CITY SCRAPYARD in FREDERICTON NEW BRUNSWICK CANADA has a couple of talons on the lot.

one is a tsi awd, the other is a esi auto i believe, anyway they both have some good parts inside and out.

check it out, they are not online but i will post the phone number later when i find my wallet.

you guys rule, you can even pm me for parts, i have a decent memory for a new school hippie. just let me know your dream part and i will check it next week early.

as crazy as this sounds, after letting my car sit at the garage over the weekend with some penetrating lube it doesn't make a sound at all.i'm not sure if i should be worried but as is the car feels alright and makes zero noise. thanks to all that helped, i found a website/company named raxles that can make some replacement axles if anyone needs anything.
