calgary,
I have a 96 tsi awd with the following done to it
-force performance Big T28 turbo - ported/polished.
-550 cc injectors, walbro fuel pump
-3 inch turbo back exhaust
-upgraded intercooler which supports 450 wheel hp.
-Dejon intake
-Hard intercooler pipes upper and lower.
-Fidenza 4.3 clutch
-k&N air intake
-SAFC tuned for 20psi.
-ARP head studs
-Wideband air fuel, boost gauge and volts in tri pillar.

I have it running 20 psi, holding 18. I still have a stock 1g BOV on it. The thing is the car feels really slow for 20 psi on this turbo. Only gained 3mph on the 1/4 mile over 17psi on the t25 stock turbo.

What should I check to make sure the car is running 100 percent? Would an evo3 16g be a better turbo?

Also, the top end is horrible right now. From a 100-160km/h I lost to a rsx-s...

Okay well I live in calgary so the elevation is pretty high. Stock turbo ran 14.5@92mph

with the big t28 @20psi with all the mods ran 14.4@95mph :banghead:

Stock 2G timing map is a little weak due to the higher compression pistons. Without a way to adjust timing, you're relying on the stock timing map to make power....and without a way to log knock, you're really tuning blind.

It truly sounds to me like you're getting timing pull from knock, hence your comment about top end being ridiculously slow.

I think there's a lot more power to be unlocked if you had a better tuning setup.

I believe so as well. With a you setup and proper tuning, you should be a lot faster than that. By whole seconds.

You'd have to buy a real tuning solution to touch timing.
And it makes a world of difference.
If you fix your AFRs you'll feel quite a bit better..

What's a cheap tuning solution which works good? DOn't have much money to spend.

I would recommend saving up your money and get ECMLINK. That will help you from spending money on a tuning solution now and then later upgrading to link. Just my suggestion.

Dsmlink is probably one of the best out there for the money..Most of the people on tuners use dsmlink.Slowboy racing is having a dsmlink sale right now, It's about 50$ off.Sometimes in the classifieds people sell there dsmlink around 500 with ecu..You could also swap in an evo8 ecu and use evoscan..
There is also megasquirt, it's cheaper, but I would only reccomend using megasquirt if you are an experienced tuner..

2G 1995-1999 DSMLINK DSM ECM LINK TURBO 4G63 V3LITE on eBay.ca (item 390305438019 end time 11-May-11 22:59:44 EDT)

something like this? or do you want the non- lite version?

If you use the lite, you just need to be sure you don't want to run a GM MAF Sensor later on

What does that mean? Sorry I'm new to this. Only done basic tuning on my safc.

Also how to tell if the ecu is eprom?

I'm pretty new too. Don't feel bad. A lot of guys will change to a GM mass airflow sensor because it is less restrictive in the air intake. The stock MAF is very restrictive, whereas the GM MAF is just a tube with a wire running through it. The full v3 version allows to that transition. The lite, to my knowledge does not.

You don't have an EPROM unless someone swapped it earlier.
There are no "cheap" tuning solutions.
You're going to pay $400+.

I know that everybody is saying ECMLINK, but the reason that they are saying that is that it is very user friendly and if you ever need help you can do what you are doing now, getting help.

I'm going to ask another question on this thread:

Last night I noticed that half throttle and full throttle the car accelerates about the same speed even though the turbo is showing about twice the boost... Leaks or what?

Also at some point I remember this big t28 would hit 20 psi around 2800 rpm. Now it won't till at least 3500...

Testing for a boost leak should be done before posting asking if you should test for a boost leak. There may also be a pre-turbo exhaust leak.
