Hi i have a little problem and need some advice. I had a blown motor so i just swapped in another the other day. I hooked everything up and all was well untill i tried to put the axles back in. On my drivers side axle the threads are stripped pretty bad. The part that gets the axle bolt screwed on. So i was wondering if anybody ha any ideas. I dont even know if they make a tap and die set to fit something that large. Am i gonna have to buy another axle? But yeah if anybody has any advice it would b greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How bad is it?

Is it all the Thread? Or is just the end area?.

I got this problem as well, But mine was only the first threads that were really bad.

I just Grind it and smooth it out, so the Nut can get in.

As far as the middle thread area is good, then you can smooth the rest (facing out).

The Nut will be at the middle of the thread area, so you don't need the rest.

Just leave some thread after the NUT gets tight at.

Yeah i would really like to just buy a new axle and just be done with it but im kinda short on funds at the moment. But the threads are only messed up on the end. The axle wouldnt come out of the hub so i had to smack it a few times. My whole suspension i just bein a pita right now. Damn ball joints. But im gonna try your method tomorrow and pray it works. Thanks for the advice guys.

Don't worry, it will work.

I have done it 4 times with no Problems.

You also can take the axle to a shop that repairs CV joints and they can clean the threads up (I did that). So many people hammer on the axle end without the nut on that they need a way to cleanup the threads the hammerer just screwed up. ROFL Call any machine shop and they might be able to cleanup the threads too.

Dont ever hit a threaded piece with a hammer to remove it... The hammer will mushroom the threads.

Ball joints, axles, etc. If you hit them with a hammer it will mushroom, use a block of wood, PB Blaster, and if needed, heat.

First off, you don't want to use a thread die or tap to repair threads. Those will just remove more metal and leave less thread. To repair threads you use something called a thread chaser which will try to reform the threads. You could try a universal outside thread chaser, but frankly, you could buy a new axle for not much more.
