Alright guys, after doing some searching and from some other dsmers, I found out my third gear synchro is going bad. When i'm driving around and upshift into third gear it shifts pretty good, but downshifting it always grinds a little bit unless I am going reallly slow. I am wondering what some of you would do in my situation. Its a 97 gst with 108k miles on it and its from cali and has NO rust. In wisconsin thats a big issue. I really don't know what it would cost me to get the synchro replaced at a tranny shop. I just had the tranny out a month ago to replace my clutch and now another tranny problem. Should I spend the money this winter to get the bad parts in the tranny replaced or find a different used tranny? I really want to keep this car in good shape but when something goes bad literally every week, its hard to do. Any opinions would be nice.

Personally, I prefer to do a rebuild on the existing transmission as it is the smarter approach to getting a quality part out of the money spent. If you purchase another used 2G FWD transmission, you can easily have the same or worse problems with it if you do not rebuild it.

This isn't that big of a deal; it is just a transmission rebuild. There's 100K+ miles on the original trans; it is time for a refresh anyways as the bearings and other components have seen a long life.

I know from reading other posts about issues similar to this that you are very into the tranny stuff. How much roughly does that cost? Just to kind of get an idea.

Well, it really depends on what wear items are needed to be replaced, and if it falls into a staged transmission rebuild, or a custom rebuild.

You can only tell how much it will cost after you have it opened up and inspected.

Shouldn't be horrible though, as long as you take care of the problem before any worse problems occur with it.

I'm kinda in the same situation. I went to a local transmission shop here and they quoted me $400 just for labor to pull and reinstall the tranny. So, $400 plus parts... I think i'm just gonna order a shep or jack's tranny at somepoint and call it a day.

If i were you I would just get yours rebuilt. I blew my tranny and decided it would be cheaper to just get a used one. Well I payed 400 for a used one on ebay plus 120 for shipping and 450 for the install. Turns out the synchros in 1st and 2nd are shit. So I payed almost 1000 bucks for a piece of shit

We at dogbox racing can help you out. The trans does have alot of miles. Doing a rebuild would save alot of headaches in the future and our prices are more then fair. Any questions shoot me a pm

Thanks and goodluck
