So im trying to figure out what kind of tranny fluid was last put into my 97 gsx automatic how can i tell? the fluid is like black and i think it smells burnt but im not sure i just bought the car last week and the previous owner will not get back to me about what he last put in it and when....the engine has 122k miles automatic now on the trans it had 10,000miles in sept of 2005 so im not sure how much it has now?

so what do u guys suggest i do i dont wanna drop it and add the wrong fluid in there then mess the trans up....

once i got a cel light and then scanned for codes and it gave me p1750. the car locks up and goes when im goin to a complete stop or just putting it in drive while it goes. when its really warmed up theres a noise commin from the torque converter like rattling i think the idiot put a torque converter that doesnt belong in that car cause i went to the site and they dont make one for eclipse?

the car has a
PI - dragon torque converter 3500 stall
black spring shift kit
b&m tranny cooler

Why does it matter what they used before if you drain it all out?

well considering the miles on the trans should i go with royal purple or Mitsubishi? well im just gonna drain the pan and refill it with whatever came out i will not do a complete flush or change since it has high miles and will mess sht up. also will replace the gasket and filter.

Have you tried to get ALL the fluid out of an auto transmission?! Simply draining it with just the plug in the pan get only about 3/4 of it out. The rest is still inside, mostly in the torque converter and cooler.

To get all the fluid out:
You can remove the cooler return line, have someone start the car and run it in neutral as you keep adding fluid until the ATF coming out of the return line looks clean.

Basically, you do a tranny flush with new fluid. It might cost you more than just pouring in a few quarts of new stuff, but at least you'll know you have good fluid.

EDIT:
Ah, here's what I was looking for:
Sorry to get here late.

This is the accurate information:

Service 5 quarts (approx)
VB removal and replacement 7 quarts (approx)
Dry fill (New Trans and Torque Converter) 10-11 quarts

Find out what auto trans shop in your town has a good rep, and go drop the $150 to have them do a service. It'll be done right, you won't have anything to worry about, and you won't be able to eff it up.

There are literally millions of twenty- and thirty-year-old cars out there that have never had their autos touched. And they live just fine.

If you can, get some amsoil or redline fluid in there. Those are the two that show the best wear pattern.

I would reccomend taking it to a tranny shop, having them do a full fluch, and have them see what the other problem you're having is, and you fix it yourself, but pay them to look into it.
