Hey guys i need help. we just rebuilt the engine, new main and rod bearings. polished crank. wiseco 9.1:1. bore 20 over. new head. roller rockers. 5 angle valve job on intake and exhaust side. 2.5 inch downpipe, 3" "no cat" back. there more but it dont matter. heres the issue. i take off and i hear a loud whining noise coming from the front. it gets louder and louder. does it through every gear. will not do it when clutch pedal is in. so when coasting in neutral at 45mph it doesn't do it. it sounds like engine knock but everything was professionally rebuilt. the exhaust bolts are secure. i have 3 small cracks in the exhaust manifold. and i am not sure about the 02 housing. could the craks have grown? could it be the 02 housing? it is louder when i am under the car than above looking at the engine. i am stuck and am afriad to drive her after dumping $5000+ into her. i dont want to ruin everything. check engine light is on, eprom chip is set for knock=check engine light going on. but even when there is no boost or its at idle it sometimes comes on. ( my friend has this issue also ) please any help would be appreciated. sorry so long.

Check to see what the check engine light is with a datalogger. If you don't have one you should get one. Also I believe Autozone does free diagnostic checks on cars.

Probably the leak in manifold, like driving with your window cracked slightly. Does your friend have any leaks also ?

Oh , question,

why after putting 5k in a motor/car the hell would you come on here a play a guessing game. Drive it to the local performance /dsm shop asap and fixit or have them look at it , shit tow it. You spend 5k on motor but have a crcked manifold, (3 cracks) , but they 're small.

I dont know man if your that scared of driving car then you should have taken it straight to mechanic.

hey i am only in high school. money is tight, time is very tight with graduation shit coming up. between school and work i dont have time for tows, everyday stops to mechanics. thats why the rebuild took place when i bought a beater. i need a car everyday. i have been looking for a new manifold and turbo for a little while. the engine has been in the car for 3 weeks no problems. i am selling the winter beater for some cash and then getting the new turbo and manifold. well it didn't last that long, now i have to get a new menifold quick. but if thats not the problem what could it be? i dont own a datalogger yet. s-afc is sitting behind in on the counter. just waiting to be installed. i will try autozone tomorrow. thanks for the help

You have a boost gauge right? What's the vacuum read? How does it boost? Is it steady? Does it get louder as you increase rpms, or as you increase boost? Sounds to me like it might be a boost leak somewhere. If it happens just with revs (like in neutral but revving), have someone rev your car up and stick your head in the engine bay, see if you can hear where it's coming from. Once you have the basic spot, check around the area with your hands (as long as it's not too hot there and there aren't things to chop off fingers there) and see if you can feel any abnormal air movement.

My brother had a whining noise start after installing a uicp, sounded like a kazoo or something. Turned out to be his bov flange leaking cuz the bov wasn't tight enough. Could be something similar with your problem.

Holy Crap What is going on here?!?!?

Listen, you say you heard a whinning noise, and then you said it sounds like engine knock. Knock in no way shape or form, weather detenation knock or rod knock sounds like a whine. So is it a whine, or a clack clack?

Dont thing that scince you just rebuilt your engine that it cant knock, that sthe best time for it to happen. The tolerances on these motors are very tight, and if some ass just got a little loost with your motor, it will rod kncok in no time, but I doubt it is that. Then again, I cant tell because you are flipping out and all over the map, first its whinning, then its knocking, then your exaust manni is leaking.

From all these symptoms, sounds like you got a 5000$ turd in your hands! get a grip man, and take it back to the shop that did this, b/c Im fairly sure you did not do this yourself.

no i am saying when your driving the car it sounds like a kazoo. but then when you lift the hood its different. the BOV is welded to the pipe. the UICP could be the culprit. time to go and check. and that $5000 put into the engine it did not turn out to be a turd. i went 13.1 in the 1/4 mile.

so you're scared of driving the car on the street, but not scared enough to take it to the track and run a 13.1 with it knocking/whirring/broken turbo/cracked manifold....sounds like if it isn't a 5000 dollar turd, with you behind the wheel, it might soon end up that way. If you're not sure about it, take it back to the mechanic that built that motor and ask him wtf is going on......cause I'd be pissed to be scared about driving my car after putting 5000 into it :thumbdown

These cars run 12s with only $2500 put into them bro ... your car is a turd. Take it back to the shop that did it.

16g turbo - $600
2g mani - $200
turboback - $1000
manual bc - $20
injectors - $300
fp - $100
safc - $300
intercooler piping - $200
clutch - $300

that's about $3000 I believe and 12s no doubt. This is all brand new parts as well. :thumbdown
