I've basically removed the entire rear end of my '92 Talon, gas tank, trailing/control arms, subframe, diff, axles, etc., along with the prop shaft, exhaust pipe & heat shield, in order to replace the ball joints, bushings, link connectors and diff & bearing seals, clean things up, remove all visible rust, and paint it over.
Only the struts remain as I rebuilt them last year. The rust is actually not that bad, at least on the frame and body. They really built these cars well. Even the inside of the frame rails appear to have been well-treated and rust-free. I'm actually amazed at the condition it's in. Well done, DSM engineers & builders!
Anyway, my Talon is white, but the underside, at least the rear part, appears to be painted a light grey. I realize that you rarely look at that part of the car but I'd rather not paint the derusted areas white and have it clash, and prefer that it matches as closely as possible the original shade of gray.
Does anyone know the color code or name of this shade of gray? I looked at the '92 color charts and the closest I could come up with was Palermo Gray Metallic L83/PV2, but that's for the Laser, not the Talon. It also seems slightly too dark.
Would this work? It says that it's for my '92 Talon:
Btw, if I get rid of most of the rust, can I prime it with either Rustoleum self-etching primer or clean metal primer, or are there better primers?
I still have a lot of work to do on the parts before they all go back on, so I can wait a few days to order or purchase the correct paint, but I would like to get it all done within a week or so.
