so long story short i lost the timeing belt on my 97 eclipse RS n/t.I bent valves have no compression on 1 2 and 3. I orderd a rebuilt head to replace mine. Ill have to reuse my old cams on the new head other then that should be good to install i think.I have found a few threads on here about complete rebuilds and have a idea on what i need to do but the closest thing to this fix ive done is a time belt. Im feeling a bit overwhelmed with it and would appreciate any advice anyone can give me thanks.

I'm going through almost the exact same experience right now with my 90 GST. Just bought the car, has broken timing, etc. etc. I haven't gotten around to buying a new head yet because I'm on a pretty tight budget having just gotten the car, but I'm doing a lot of research on the project. I don't have any good experienced tips on doing this job, but I do have the entire 90-99 factory service manual for DSMs. It gives a good description of everything you need to do to replace the head gasket, which basically means removing/replacing everything you need to just replace the head itself. I've linked to the .rar for downloading below (you will need something to unzip it and then preferably adobe to read the .pdf's), but if you don't feel like downloading a strange file from somebody off the internet, let me know and I'll try and take screen shots of all the relevant pages for you.

thanks for all the advice from everyone. i did end up buying a haynes manual and it took me about 2 weeks to do the job. After words i had three leaks to fix an o2 leak that was just a lose conection, power stearing leak that was an untorked banjo bolt, and a masive oil leak that was the cam sproket seal i had forgot to put in. I took my time and made sure to keep bolts and nuts in labeled bags and i was well organized it all went pretty smooth. from the time i broke down till now my car has cost me bout 3 months and bout 1000$. But sooo happy to have it back!!! On the positive side of things i now know my car alot better and have learned so much. So For the guy in the same boat as me i got my head on ebay and it was like $380 after a $150 core. The whole thing cost me more because i replaced a lot of parts during the whole 3 months. i will post some pics and a list of all the things i replaced n a few days. thanks again for the advice this site helped a whole lot. i dont think i could have done the job with out you guys!!!!

Looking forward to the pics/list! It will be a nice extra resource for me when I finally get around to doing this job myself. I'm still trying to shop around on a head/etc. just because between the head/all the gaskets/timing/etc. (and I have to buy all my tools, as I don't have a tool collection yet) I am going to have to do quite a bit of saving, so I figured I'll do some really intense bargain shopping while I have to wait anyway. Glad to hear you got yours up and running! Gives me hope for my own experiences down the road.

That's great. I like to see people doing their own work and learning. Even if you get it wrong sometimes you are still learning and you will be able to fix more things and be a good resource member.

i wanna say sorry it took so long to get back on here but lifes crazy right. so after a crazy few months i have the net back and thought i would finally post my list i have no pics because a crazy x girlfirend tossed my phone with my pics into a lake so no pics sorry. but i still have my list of parts new head and gaskets, i got the head gasket kit, cam sensor, crank sensor, both o2 sensors, new exhaust manifold and exhaust all the way back, spark plugs, wires, and coil, all new belts, timeing belt tensioner/ pulleys, water pump, harmonic balancer, fuel pump and filter, two motor mounts, and a few hoses. I kept my old head i am going to have it ported and polished i want to do it up right with all good parts but that will take time and money. thanks for all the advice its been 2 months and shes still runing great :hellyeah: my advice to anyone is you can do it go slow and take lots of pic. they helped me alot and use this great site!!!!

I just went through this its not as hard as you think. Make use you get some ziplock bags and label the bolts and where they came from. Its takes time if its your first time but after you get it done you will feel like you can fix anything llsROFL With the right tools you can do anything!

A man with a toolbox can do anything, hardest part for me was building the courage to dig the ...in and get her done. Don't forget to do the oil port mod!
