Hey fellas...

I have a bad oil leak with minor traces of coolant and it's all on the underside of the alternator area and front of the block.

I'm in the process of replacing the timing components and diagnosing this leak.

Car is a 90 TSI AWD 5spd with 240,000 kms (140K Miles) & all stock.

So far I have the exhaust manifold, turbo, acc & tbelts off. Waterpump was not leaking but when I took off the exh manifold some oil came out of cylinder 1 & 2 exhaust ports.

The exhaust manifold only has slight cracking where it meets the turbo and the turbo has no shaft play which is even stranger, not complaining but maybe someones replaced it before?? It looks to be in good shape all around.

The oil looks to be coming from the cam seals (oil was all under timing covers) as well as there was oil under the timing covers covering everything.

The last question I have is on the pic of the valve train, it looks like someone honed out an area so one of the studs could be accessed - is this normal? There were some metal burs that look like they could fall into the valley of the valve train and should of been cleaned better if someone was in there last.

Any insight would be great - I'm planning on posting more pics once I get the head off. Thanks in advance...

Well here our guide to maintenence DSM 4G63 Maintenance Guide - DSMtuners

I didnt see anything on the manifold maybe it was the picture.

Thanks for replying...

Yeah I meant thr tiny cracks were on the turbo side where it meets the mani...

Thanks for the link, I haven't seen that one before - I like how it's more condense than some others I've seen...

In anyone's opinion, should I take the head off? It only smoked at start-up which I thought were valve stems seals but looking at the head/block now tells me there;s more?

Just to take a chance here and maybe save some headache, for the longest time I couldn't find an oil leak. I replaced the valve cover gasket and that didnt fix it. Come to find out, our cars hate anything BUT OEM valve cover gaskets. I couldn't even tell where is was leaking from, but when I put the new correct gasket on it fixed the problem. My block looked just like yours, covered in old and nasty sludge.

As for your oil on startup, your turbo doesnt seem to be the problem. Was there oil in the runner on may it have dripped in as you were taking it off? I may be possible the oil was seeping through the exhaust mani gasket and burning off at startup. That may be a long shot though. . .

Probably valve seals

No way dude, I have a 1990 Talon AWD standard with a TD05H and I'm doing the exact same thing right now. Had an antifreeze leak into my oil, changing the head gasket.

My guess is it's a valve stem seal. Also the turbo o ring seals could be leaking too. I had a slow oil leak that I didn't know where it was coming from. When I took the turbo out, I noticed the oil inlet line to the turbo, crusher washer was leaking, the previous owner must of tried to put some silicone on it that caused it to leak. Think buying new crusher washers to seal the oil, water lines is a good investment. Make sure everything is spotless and really crank them down.

So far I have all my intake piping out, oil drained, antifreeze drained, turbo out, throttle body off, egr off, vac lines disconnected, fuel rail and injectors out, coil pack out, cam sensor out.

I think the intake manifold is going to have to come off with the head, those bottom intake bolts are ridiculously hard to get at.

One of the other problems I have is pressure cracks by the waste gate, have to replace the turbine housing

1 thing about the 1G's that you have to love is the ports are gigantic :0

I'll go take a pic of my ports and post it, looks to me like the #1, #3 and #4 exhaust ports are leaking oil, have a ring around the port face, which still could be the intake side valve stem seals. When putting new valve seals on your suppose to have a special tool, some people just hammer them on with socket, might of caused a leak, also the valve cover gasket might be leaking, or out by the cam gears.

Your oil just don't look right to me looking at your cam shot, maybe getting some blow by form the exhaust into the valve cover, then it looks like your exhaust manifold wasn't cleaned very well when whoever did it, looks like it's leaking too.

When you get your head off, a way to test for a bent valve is to fill the port with brake clean, and see if it leaks out the valves when they're closed.

What's your turbine outlet look like coming out of the turbo(exhaust side)?

I'll be wrenchin too bro

So here the pics of my car. I have oil on the block but that was from the turbo, no oil black 0 ring around the port, or on the exhaust manifold.

The stock valve cover gasket is really good material, it can be reused. I brought my valve cover inside and cleaned the valve cover and gaskets up with Wash n Wipe, it's like acetone but dosen't remove paint to get all the crap off them. Then just dipped my finger in some fresh oil and coated the gasket and put it back, don't want to put it on dry. Green scotch pad works good for wiping it off, no sandpaper.

Hope that helps, PEACE OUT

Yeah lots to chew over, thanks for the advice guys...

I don't think the turbo was leaking, I had no smoke under boost, only at start up and parking lot driving, which tells me valve stem as well.

I have to look at the back of the turbo as suggested, I will take the head off this Saturday and post pics...

The lower bolts look like a pain, any advice/tips?

_89talonTYLER_ good luck with your project...

I heard filling them up with water is better as the brake clean evaporates too quick but I'll try it

thanks!
