Ok, laugh at this if you want but please, no smart ass replies please.

This summer I plan on getting a turbo kit for my 96 GS. My dad is always telling me that I need to save as much money as I can because I will need it in the future (which I know is true). What I'm asking from you is, can you help me find a way to explain to my dad why there's a turbo sitting under my hood when he opens it up. And I can't imagine what he's gonna say when he sees the boost gauge inside the car... Anyone been through this too? I'm only 17. My dad will know when I'm upgrading my car, especially with a turbo. He'll ask me why, then he'll ask how much it costs. Don't know what he'd say to the price of the the kit, plus everything else I've done... Oh well, can anyone help? I'd appreciate it if you could. :)

Tell him it gives you better gas milage or somthing like that.. my dad let me get my GSX and i'm only 16....just be honest and say u wanna get up and go faster.

i was going through the same thing as you. my dad wanted me to save money, and he said it wasnt worth it to put that much money in a 5 year old car  (even tho its the newest of the dsm's). well finally i came to the conclusion that he wouldnt let me get a turbo, so i explained to him that the only way to make my car fast is to have some sort of forced induction, and if i cant get a turbo then nitrous was the only other way... well believe it or not he let me get it, and he even helped me install it. so if he will be pissed about how much a turbo kit costs, you can always go nitrous :thumb:

Just be honest with your parents. Seriously. There are turbo kits going around sometimes for around 1000 dollars which is a big fraction of the MSRP. Look out for one of those deals and keep some extra money for later on and tell him, "Yea, I've got a turbo, but with all the money that I saved, I have a $1500 blanket to sit on."

How do you feel when your dad lies to you, or tries to fool you.

Give him the same respect.

Consider going the smart way, and get a GSX instead. Much cheaper.

tsk... Defiant... i expected more from you then that...

It's not only the money that I'm worried about telling him. I just don't know what to say when he asks me why I'm making my car faster. He'll know, he's not stupid when it comes to cars. I was thinking about getting a custom turbo kit instead, someone on here listed the parts he got and it was only about $2k in parts, instead of the $3k+ from Hahn. So the money isn't the only issue.

If you crash your N/T and the insurance company finds a turbo you didn't tell them about, you'll find out what rape really is. The hard way.

But lying to an insurance company isn't that much different than lying to your dad, I guess. Or, anyone else.

I can't make out your inflection. In what sense did you mean?

as im dissapointed that you, a moderator, would be telling NT's to sell there cars and buy turbo dsm's. i would think that you would understand the desire to make our cars faster, not sell it to buy a faster one. everyone knows that option and it gets old, i wouldnt expect you to still be throwing it around.

when in doubt...lie :) jk, but honestly if i were u (since i am in the same situation) ur not gonna like this but i would just wait....wait till you are out on ur own have a stable job and wont have to listen to ur parents anymore. Im not exactly sure of what situation u are in, but if they paid for the car they can take it away too OMG OR just turbo it and if they find it then tell them it was a lot cheaper then it was thats if they actually notice, not sure if ur parents would loook under the hood....GOOD LUCK :thumb:

Personally speaking its about how cool is your dad. My dad got mad at me when I put a short ram in my car and yelled at me for throwing away the stock system. Also you are 17, just wait to you 18 and give your parents I'm a legal adult speech that all of us to explain to our parents. Just save your money and wait to you are 18 and tell him that making your car faster is a hobby and should repect that. Hope that will work.

If that don't work then sell the car and get a turbo. ( I hate to say that) if you are left with no choices. Then you can say to your dad it came like that ;)

if you turbo your car you will get Tickets. (especially if you live in Cali.)
SO i would say wait till you get older and more income.
That way you will have more driving experience and not crash.(as much)
And you probly wont get as many tickets, but if you do you will be able to pay them of by yourself and not get hassled by your parents.

Everyone seems to know it, but far too few follow it. Being a moderator doesn't mean they've removed the tiny part of my brain that thinks- with the price of factory-turbo'd DSMs sinking by the day, the intially-flawed concept of trying to make an N/T survive the stresses of turbocharging moves ever-further from silly and ever-closer to idiocy. Yes, many will continue to do it, and those few who are really competent and operate the conversion with restraint can get away with it. Such probably won't be the case with a 17-year-old.

what your forgetting is, even tho turbo dsm's prices are falling, NT's prices are falling just as rapidly, so selling an NT you will get less money to spend on a turbo, and the extra money you have to put in to buy a turbo dsm, you could have bought a turbo kit and been well on your way to rebuilding your bottom end, if the extra money needed to buy the turbo dsm doesnt cover both the turbo and bottom end rebuild already. its not followed to often because most of the dsm owners are young, and most NT owners are still teens and cant afford a turbo kit, let alone twice that to get a turbo dsm. its not followed because it isnt economically worth it.

another reason is maybe they want to have something different and not fall into the thousands of other 300+hp turbo dsm's. anyone can make a decent powered turbo dsm, but it takes more work and more skill and is more of a challenge to make an NT a power monster.

GSGoingFast is absolutely right. NT cars are becoming dirt cheap now a days. and i agree with defiant about a 17 year old turboing there car. I was just 18 when i got my first eclipse and i didnt even know anything about turbo's at that point. a few months after having the car i started hearing abt it and wanted to go turbo. Unfortunately i was very uneducated and didnt realize the money needed and time to do such a thing. Now after a year ago, i sold my eclipse and i wanted to buy a turbo. Instead my uncle was selling his 93 eclipse gs, which had the whole package, he had everything you could get for it. So instead i used my money and bought that and was like the hell with the turbo. I didnt have the money and in the future id rather install the turbo, and not pay the insurance of having a turbo car. . . and the issue with people saying that you will get screwed if the insurance company finds out abt you having a turbo in a NT is bull. . . Atleast for 1g owners there is no worries, b/c if you got into an accident the car is almost guranteed to be considered totaled by the ins company b/c its such an old vehicle and they wont bothere looking at it. Im not here to start any fights, b/c i def still have much to learn abt my own dsm, and abt turboing it. But i am very determined, and slowly i am modding my car and eventually i will get all the correct information and parts i need to do it. If anyone is planning to turbo, they should make a guide to follow, step by step to make sure there car will be able to handle putting a turbo in. And if people look hard enough, they can find the parts resonable priced. I'm alittle lucky b/c i know someone who has gone thru a couple of turbo eclipse/talons, so he has plenty of extra parts to sell me,(wiring harness, ecu, turbo, manifold, mas, injectors, piping, intercooler, etc) all for a couple hundred. Once i get the money i'll be talking to him again. Thats my opinion, but what the hey

From what i understand, the people who turbo their nt cars without telling the insurance are afraid of losing all their money when they get in an accident. The insurance company wont pay for parts they didnt know about.

And every guy with an n/t knows that selling his car and buying a turbo is an option....theres no point in telling us again and again, we get the point, so why cant we all just assume everyone knows that without having to repeat it a billion times

Yep, we have all heard that before. It's a choice, everyone gets to pick one or the other. I"m not against or for doing such a thing.
