This just started happening a couple of days ago. I installed a brand new starter thinking the starter was the issue...have an interstate honda battery fully charged installed. All transmission bolts are tight...the stater plate is installed. I have an act twin disk installed with a forged comp clutch fork...oem tob and pivot ball..teeth look good and everything is nice and tight. I installed an extra ground wire off the transmission.. I thought let me disconnect the clutch switch and start the car in neutral without pressing the clutch...problem is still there. The transmission has a welded center...viscous delete and lsd insert up front..never launched the car so im positive nothing can be broken. The trans will go into all gears smoothly and no noises at all once motor fires up. Not sure where to look at next. Also want too add...motor is not seized..turns over by hand. The noise is like a metal slap noise...very odd...not a grinding or scratching. Im really at a loss. Any ideas?

Confirm that the clutch cover is not contacting the clutch fork.

Otherwise, in neutral it shouldn't be making any noises; it should have harmonics / light rattling when the clutch is depressed as the floaters are going to be doing their job.

Have you taken off the starter and confirmed its condition? It sounds like the starter gear is contacting the ring gear or it is not fully engaging/disengaging the starter gear. The correct starter spacer plate is installed too?

Brand new starter installed...spacer plate has been the sameone used without issue. The trans has a welded cd and lsd insert upfront...really at a loss...flywheel teeth look good too. Installed a new ground wire as well still samething. Tried disconnecting the clutch switch and start it without pressing clutch pedal still the same. Took apart timing belt..spun motor and cams by hand all spin freely...samething. Found a loose rear motor mount..fixed it...problem still there. Im at a loss.....would a broken pressure plate finger do this? Once running noise is gone...dont want to pull the trans...but might not have a choice. Any other suggestions?

I'd pull the trans and check, something is not right; that is for sure. I do not know if the Comp fork needs additional clearance with the ACT twin; it shouldn't but again, I typically don't use ACT twins.
