I just bought a 1995 GS-T for $2200 cause it wasnt in the greatest shape ever. It has 92K mi. But today I took it to the shop and htye want $2300 to fix it up... Here is what they want to do:

All new motor mounts
New clutch
Front-end alignment
Timing Belt
New seals in all bearings for pulleys
All new belts
Water Pump
Oil Pressure sending unit
Speed cluster
and fixing the mirrors

Do you think they are asking the right price? :dsm:

Also, there is this switch right at my left foot where all the fuses are. I havent really looked at it, but i wasnt sure if there is a mod that you can do somewhere around there to do something? Does anyone know what that is?

All new motor mounts-$100
New clutch-$300
Front-end alignment-$50
Timing Belt-$175 w/tensioner(should change tensioner too)
New seals in all bearings for pulleys-don't know what the H this is
All new belts-$50
Water Pump-$100
Oil Pressure sending unit-$40
Speed cluster-$25
and fixing the mirrors-what's wrong with them?

That's maybe $1000 after taxes, so $1200 in labor @ $65/hr= 18 hours = bullshit. This would take 10 hours tops, for a novice.

I'm assuming you don't do work yourself and don't want to, because this would save you some serious cash.

Oh and what is the switch connected to/look like?

Lol, the left mirror, like it fell off its little track. I really dont have the knowledge to do all this crap myself that I why i dont do it. I am new to the DSM place and might do it as time goes and I start to learn more. I used to have a supercharged Mazda.

They are charging me like 800 something for the clutch because of labor, and it was like $350 for the parts. And I think they are buying the motor mounts from Mitsubishi, so its a little more expensive. And they said that the Mitsubishi's at this time are notoriuous for leaking some trype of fluid from somewhere by bearings or seals for the pulleys. And they do over the top when they do Timing belt becuase they are a specialty shop. I ahev used this shop for a long time, just wanted to check on their prices. I have always driven an A/T and this is my first clutch to change....dang that isn't cheap.

The switch is like the one in the picture but without the red cap. I am not sure what it is connected to...I will have to look into it when I get it back.

$800 for labor alone or including parts is RIDICULOUS. Should be $500 tops including parts and labor, especially if you are getting an OEM-like clutch. Don't get new mitsu motor mounts, get prothane ones, they will never die on you and are probably half the $.

That switch could be anything, fog lamps, neon lights, NO2, frickin' laser beams. You'll have to trace the wires to see where they go. Probably some lighting that is or isn't still there.

I don't know what "they do over the top" means, but the fluid leaking jazz sounds like BS. Pulleys don't have seals. You should find out exactly what they are talking about.

I'd recommend removing the balance shaft while you are in there, it may save you 16 valves at some point, and you will break about even getting the removal kit as opposed to replacing the belt.

I'd also recommend replacing the crank pulley, as it can fall apart and hell breaks loose. With all that jazz off already, you might as well replace it.

i would almost bet that the switch you saw is for the fuel pump.. its sort of a security device some people install.. sorry if someone else mentioned it above..

according to shop prices the 800 for the work on clutch is about normal price.
300 for clutch + 500 labor
i don't think any shop is going to even take off the tranny for less than $500

i get my clutch and labor done for it for less than $500

I would go around and find aftemarket parts to replace a lot of that stuff, but some of it you should use the factory replacement. Unless you're racing, the timing belt can be replaced with OEM but the clutch, mounts and pulleys can be replaced with aftermarket which will most likely give you better performance as well. Just be aware that things like prothane motor mounts and the balance shaft removal, and pulleys will give you engine more vibration which you will feel through the seat.

Well I have another question...There is this thing under my passenger seat that I thought was the ECU but apparently ECU's are in the center console. But it black and it has cooling fins. What is that? Is that the Infinity amp or something aftermarket, cause my speedo cluster was disconnected when I bought the car. :dsm:

Nope, stock anti-theft. But this is my 1st DSM and I havent even got to drive it yet. And why would you turn off the fuel pump?

Fooey. There was just another thread about this topic, and the conclusion was $300 for a R&R on an AWD is achievable. For a FWD it should be easy to find someone to do the labor for $300, plus the flywheel for a few bucks.

you know what go buy your own parts.... And ask them what the labor is.. If you want motor mounts get poly urathane ones... Slowboyracing.com or Extremepsi.com or thespeedfactor.com and just get all your parts from them... And then go around and ask different shops what they will charge and go from there...

I actually like those sites.... I have been looking for sites to find stuff on. So thanks

man, those prices are outrageous. like weith1111 said, you need to be checking somewhere else. i cant really say on the labor though because i do all my stuff myself. i really thing you should go check somewhere else though and buy the parts yourself because it looks like you are getting ripped bad. good luck, you might need it.

Well its all good. I am only 17 and my dad has paid for all the repairs at that place already.

I dont know of any people I just know that these people specialize in imports, and they mostly specialize in Mazda. They are not a chain of shops, they are like one place that does all th e custom work and stuff that normal shops wont do. They have had some Skylines, RX-8's, 350z'z and higher class cars like that. :dsm:
