1G My first awd turbo dsm 1st gen need help please!

Hello I'm new to this whole forum thing. I've been looking around before posting so I don't get bashed, but anyways I just bought my first DSM. A 92 Eclipse with a 4g63 6bolt motor, automatic. That will change in the future.

Now my questions, when I bought car it had really old gas inspection. From 2009, it wouldn't stay idled. And timing belt snapped when I got home. Just put a new head, well used head with good valves on it, a step colder plugs been wires and a 180 thermostat. Oil and coolant felpro. Head gasket, changed the automatic. Exhaust manifold to the manual one bc. It's ported bigger, well....

After that It's ticking real loud, I guess lifters? Also it was pinging, and spark knocking my friends said due time bad fuel, very low power like none,? Turbo needs crush washers on the oil lines on the housing causing the oil smell I suppose? And last but not least will not shift into overdrive?

Please help I need this running for my daily, and if anyone can tell me or tell me what threads to look for to gain a lil power cheap easy mods that I can do. And what boost level can I turn it to without tune or fuel safely? Thanks mat when I figure how to post pics of my piece. I will thanks in advance

Get it running right before worrying about making more power. Are you 100 percent sure that the timing is right? If you suspect that it has old gas in it than drain it out. Why try to run the engine on that stuff. As for not shifting to overdrive, does it just not go into overdrive, or does it rev like it's in neutral when it should shift into overdrive?

Here is what i'd do. Drain old gas, fill with new 93 octane. Change fuel filter. Double check cam timing. Set base timing with timing light, and check for boost leaks. It's always a good idea to check the compression while you are at it to verify that the head is good, and that you don't have any damaged pistons.

Defiantly do a Boost Leak Test, one blt could save you hundreds of hair pulling situations. If you just get it running right that will be a lot more power right there.

Take it a step at a time. Fluids and all maintenance to get it up to date. Then tackle the leaks from easiest to hardest but dont break your brain trying to make the motor dry underneath, monitor your fluids and take it slow.

Timing is good, how do I check for boost leaks and I already basically mixed 93 with it would be a shame to dump it I could still change the filter.

As for overdrive it just won't go in 1st second shifts does shift hard but shifts then second to third is good then acts. Luke there is No more gear 4500 rpm at 65-70mpg

You should definitely drain that gas out. Bummer that you mixed new gas into it, but that's an easy thing to rule out as a problem. Drain it, refill with the highest octane you can get at your local station, and then RESET THE ECU by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 mins.

I guess I will do that gas is liquid gold I'll use it in a lawn mower or something I recon. Any ideas about overdrive???

OK updates, my friend traded my mass. Air flow meter for his modded one, turned the idle all the way up so maybe it stays on but No luck idles almost but barley, thinking the 02 sensor may be dead, car is running so rich it Burns ## eyes and smells horrible, any other suggestions? Also noticed valve cover is now leaking again. Car pick up better but nit great still have crap gas in it hits 8 lbs at 2600 12.5lbs at 3000.

+1 with what they said ^^^ Maintainence is key esp with a dsm... change spark plugs, wires, the usual stuff and i would try a new front 02 sensor and keep an eye out for a stock unmodified mas. in my past experiences a stockish car does not always like a modified mas without some way of tuning it like dsmlink or ems

OK I get paid Friday I will be buying a new o2 sensor someone also told me grab 4 new injectors from the junkyard. My cat will also be emptied Friday fresh gas with new fuel filter. I will let y'all know what happens still would like some feedback on the tranny. Not going Into overdrive at all.

Don't start buying a bunch of random parts for the car. Do a boost leak test before you buy an 02 sensor, spark plugs, wires or anything. From there drain the gas, change the fuel filter and see how it does.

Did a boost check No leaks, new wires new plugs air filter, oil count and thermostat. All that's done, only thing left J's fuel filter I'm going to change that Friday, other then that I'm lost with the No power, won't idle slow boost. Gain., No overdrive, it also has a valve cover all maintenance. Is done basically....

It sounds like the tranny is in limp mode. It doesn't start out in first gear. That could be why you are feeling the lack of power. IT will feel pretty doggy if it is in limp mode.

Well you have to find out what is causing it. There are many things that can, anything from a bad solenoid, bad pulse generator, bad wiring, bad tcu, no power to tcu. It is basically what the transmission does when there is a problem or no ecu controlling it. It is a fail safe built into it that allows you to get it home or to a shop without damaging anything. I would start out by checking the transmission codes. Here is a page that will help you with that.

It will shift but only 2 times and the Inital start from stop is super slow.

Look into maybe a bad ecu or tcu.

Everything seems to be covered. One thing though, If you plan on making decent power, might want to rethink the Manual swap. Auto 1gs are hard to find and everyone wants one for a reason. Read some more.

Also, if you can't find a TCU, you could always do the Kiggly manumatic mod. Does away with the TCU altogether.

OK drained the gas and chained the filter gas I. The filter was white and nasty and smelled horrible I added seafoam. And filled up with 93 gas added an octain. Boost and water treatment runs a little better and I fixed my idle issue the idle screw backed all the way off and fell out now it idles, car still doesn't start first turn of key gotta give it gas and hold key for like 30-45 seconds before it will fire any ideas?? Also tranny. Is in failsafe. Any ideas all fuses good??

OK guys update, new fuel filter new gas all old gone, found the power/economy button wires had come undone fixed that, all new wires and stuff like that , tranny still in failsafe, checked tcu its good , had someone look thru it, after fixing the economy button it will go from 1st to 2nd then immidiatly into third after getting into second and will stay there forever no overdrive nothing unless u turn car off then it will do it all over, also started revving tonight 1000 rpms to 1500 rpms like a honda with bad iacv if i fix the tranny should run great iv just about fixed everything else any ideas?

Did you get any codes when you checked for them? Did you reset the battery after you hooked the economy switch?
