I've asked several ppl and been told it could be my tranny. Some also said it can be my clutch went out. The car had a clutch line leak and wouldnt go into gears after me trying to force it (stupid i know) so i shut it off and checked the hood. after replacing clutch fluid and fixing the line leak i started it up and it has this loud grinding sound when i let off the clutch but goes away if i try to shift until i hit the gas again. any idea what the problem could be?

So if I'm understanding this properly, when you do not have the clutch pressed in it makes noise? Like a grinding/chattering? And when the clutch is pressed in you do not hear the noise?

Does the noise go away after a little driving?

How many miles on transmission?

1) Throw out bearing could be worn and need replacing
2) Output shaft bearings. (Inside the output shaft cluster is a caged needle bearing that tendss to make noise.) If this is the problem, I suggest a professional transmission rebuilder for services.

Even if its sitting there idling with the clutch out?
If it is in neutral and my foot is off the clutch it still grinds

I havent taken it on the road since the noise is so bad im afraid of causing further damage so its parked now. Someone else mentioned it could have been a bearing as well. Im fairly new to manual transmissions just how they operate and things of that nature.

I would put money on the throw out bearing. I've been driving mine with a bad throw out bearing for nearly 6 months. The noise gets old but it's drivable.

I'm not advocating doing so, but the worst i've really ever seen happen is that eventually your clutch stops engaging and you gotta pull the tranny LOL.

I'm just hoping it holds out until spring, then i plan to change my bearing, my rear mount, exhaust, oil pan gasket and a few other things.

There's only one way to find out. OP is going to have to pull the bell housing back from the block and replace the throwout bearing.

If it continues to make noise after that, I would use my breaker bar as a listening device. Place it on the gear half of the trans housing and listen for the grind. (I'm still going off of the idea that the output shaft cluster needs servicing.)

probably your clutch release bearing. mines been grinding for a year now, its hard to get in gear only when I first start it. it gets better the warmer the tranny gets. its up to you if you want to change it now or when it breaks.
