Saskatoon,
I bought a used engine from a salvage yard and i've already ripped it apart to freshen it up (head gasket, water pump, oil pump, b-belt elimination, everything associated with the t-belt). I'm going with the cometic MLS HG and from surfing around the forums found that I had better get the head and block decked for the HG to seal properly. Now my question is, do I have to have the block and head totally bare for the machine shop to do this? or can I leave the pistons, crank in the block, and the valves and such in the head. I did a compression and leakdown test before the motor was ripped apart which showed compression to be 163-162-160-165 and leakdown in every cylinder was under 10%. The cylinder walls are in excellent condition with no vertical scratches and I can still see the crosshatch markes very well. Being as I have never totally ripped apart a block or head I don't want to mess around with this perfectly good setup. What are your opinions? Thanks for any answers.

Yes it must be bare. If you get metal shavings stuck in between the pistons and the cylinder walls you can whipe out a ring almost instantaneously.
