Having trouble with a new ign. coil setup I'm trying out. Hopefully someone can give me a logical reason why...car is a '90 awd.
Running 4 Blaster coils, wired up so 1&4 are firing together and 2&3 firing together, just like stock. I have +12v going to the + side of the 4 msd coils directly from the battery, and the red coil wire going to neg. side of the 1&4 coils, white going to neg. on 2&3 coils. When I crank the car, it sputters and backfires, like the timing is incorrect. The plugs are firing but with a very weak spark. I wired the tach interface up and the tach works (bounces while cranking), so the wiring seems correct. And of course when I plug the stock coil pack back in it fires right up.
Is there any reason that a MSD coil is different than a stock coil? (other than the obvious two tower vs 1) The msd coil has a primary resistance of .7ohm, dsm is .8, the secondary is a bit different though, stock is 10k, msd is 5k. But with all the various COP setups people have gotten to work, I'm having a hard time believing that the secondary resistance difference is enough to not even start the engine.
Thanks for any input, please no replies saying how great the stock ignition is, this is a fun project for me.
Thanks, Marshall

Got the msd coils working, they should've worked all along but my ECT wiring had cracked and was loose...pics of the setup...

and here's the reason I decided to try messing with the msd coils again, car was breaking up horribly above 6300...I was still happy with 483/410

nope, trying to cure misfire issues without a box...would a dis-4 be able to fire 4 coils with only 2 inputs? or, would a dis-2 be able to fire 4 coils?
thanks.

From what I've read you def need the dis-2 because we (dsm') have something called a wasted spark wich is a multi spark system this is why most if not all cop systems where sputtering.

To make it work right you need to get the dis-2 for this feature . Their i go I guess I just let the cat out of the beg. :toobad:

all wasted spark does is fire the coil twice as often as necessary, that shouldn't bother a coil that is designed for firing 8 cylinders.

fixed my problem, updated original post, hope this helps others looking for cheaper ignition upgrades alternatives :thumb:

Did this fix the breaking-up problem you had above 6300 rpm? Just curious, as I am thinking of trying something like this too. Also, which model Blaster coils are you using?

I'd hold off on trying it, I took the car out today to make sure all was well before hitting the track tonight and it was misfiring above 4000 even without boost, but I also had a coolant line split and spray water everywhere so hopefully that's the problem...
:rolleyes:
using blaster 2 coils
