hello. i drive a 1997 eclipse gs. nothing special. with in the past week i had blown my radiator. which cause my engine to overheat. (who would have guessed right) the aftermath of this was a blown head gasket. the way i knew was by the water leaking out of my exhaust and the huge white cloud of smoke that was coming out of it. so instead of fixing this engine i want to do a swap. i have in mind the 4g63. i know it would be one hell of a head ache. but maybe you guys can help me out. all of my friends are honda drivers and want me to put the gsr motor in. than again i dont know anyhting about that either. not really big on running a honda motor in a mitsubishi. if you guys can help me out with this it would be great. thanks

Kyle

You should search. There are plenty of discussions on the subject of replacing a 420a with a 4g63. Most say it's cheaper to go out and buy a GST or GSX.

As for the GSR motor :notgood: that would be heresy.

Besides the stock 4g63 with 5 spd. puts out 215 HP and the 1.8 GSR around 180 hp.

The Honda guys will say "but that's with no turbo"

True but for the $3 to 5k it takes for an aftermarket turbo,, you could put major HP into the 4g63. :D

The layout of both engines is completely different. Your going to need serious fabrication skills and a lot of time not to mention a spare car. If you want boost, your cheapest and best bet is gunna be to buy a gst/x. As for the honda motor thought? Yuck, first, the time you spend trying to get it fit, and run and pass e-check or an inspection followed by the nightmare of wiring it. Your going to have a turd due to the size and weight difference. Hondas weigh like 200 pounds. DSMs just...dont.

you would have a better shot with an srt4 motor then a 4g63

It'd be cheaper and easier to build and boost your 420a than to swap a 4g63 into it, and you'll be making more power.

If you have to have a 4g63, buy a vehicle with a 4g63 (or 4g64) already installed.

If you have to do a swap, the 2.4l cloud car motor will fit, with a couple custom parts and some wire switching.

im not goin to do the gsr swap. sorta dont want to deal with it. plus dont want the H on my engine. i do want the 4g63. but like some of you recommended i am looking for a gst/x just hard to find up here in a Ny. one way or another i will have a turbo under the hood of my car. either gettin a gst/x or swapping mine out.

that is another thing i am looking at. the money part. it is deff way cheaper to boost the 420a. ive been pricing kits to rebuild my engine and they are not to bad. ebay works wonders

Sounds like a good option for you, I decided to swap with a used motor. Mine is a stock DD N/T and I'm fine with that. It's much less expensive, but it's all about what you want from the car, good luck...

Whatever works for your budget will be what's good for you. However, I think eventually working towards a 4G6x-based car would be a Good Thing. It's a better platform to build from.

As my friend who owns a Vette told me "You can make your DSM faster than my Vette, sure. But put the same amount of money into my Vette and you get an exponentially better car than your DSM, even built."

...he has a point. But budget matters most.
