So as some of you may know I have purchased a 1990 Laser R/S. The car has a spun rod bearing. I have found a motor from a 1999 Eclipse GSX. I have been told this is the same motor as it is a 4g63. I realize the GSX is an AWD, will this motor still drop in with no problems? Is the only main difference the transfer case? I have found the engine for a fairly good price and am looking to purchase it this week. :thumb:

Yes I have heard the same about crankwalk. Apparently my car already has a 7 bolt in it according to the guy I bought it from. I am going to have him drop the motor in. But even he was asking about how it would work due to GSX being AWD. I believe its just the transfer case that is different though. I am wondering if anybody has any experience doing this swap, or seen it done. :laser:

Don't do the 7-bolt swap. Trust me. Also I bet that the guy that had it before you didn't know what he was talking about because it would be alot of work to drop in a 7-bolt motor (2g) and would require research, therefore he wouldn't have done it beings the 7-bolt motors are bad. But did the R/S have a 4g63T in it from the last guy? Or was it all stock? If it wasn't AWD it would take a decent amount of work. also, the turbo engines do not just drop into the non-turbo bay. They would require a new ECU, Harness, Transmission, Etc.

The 2g has it's engine mounts on the tranny where the 1g is on the engine block. Sorry to say it won't work. You can go 1g engine into 2g chassy or 2g tranny into 1g chassy but not vice versa.

4G63 refers to it being a 2.0, you may want to consider the engine mounts. I've recently swapped my 1990 Plymouth Laser RS motor for a 1993 ###. Spec. Eclipse motor and found some problems with the mounts. Hope I could help.

+1 Absolutely correct.

Thanks for all the response so quickly!! I was planning on buying that motor from a 99 GSX this weekend but I guess not. :beatentodeath: I dont know what the guy is talking about when he says it is a 7 bolt but I will find out exactly what it came out of so I can know a little more about what it is. I had no clue there even was a 1g 7bolt motor? WTF So what would be my best bet? try to find a decent 6 bolt? or maybe find one with a spun bearing or whatever and just fix it up? In the meantime, me and my buddy are going to put a new set of rod bearings in sometime next week. I will take some pics as it progresses. Hopefully I will get this car running very soon and then well be in business!! :sneaky:

Yes, in 1992 there was a 7 bolt. But it was mid year, I want to say April, but do not quote me on that.
Get a 6 bolt motor, it was your OEM motor, and they are not that hard to find. If you are going to get one to "fix up" I would get a NT block, and build it up.
