Hi, I currently have about $6,000 saved up in the bank. I am trying to decide what to do, so I need a little help. I am looking at selling my 98 GS and then getting a 2gb GSX, but I would need to borrow some money from my parents in order to do so, which I don't want to do. My question is this: Could I spend $3-4k on mods for my GS and make it very fast at all? I don't want to run any nitrous, but wouldn't have a problem turboing the car as long as you guys think the 420a could handle it. So, could I get my GS running very fast at all with $3-4thousand? I'm not looking for the car to be a street beast keep in mind, I just want a car with some pep that is more fun to drive than my slug of a car I have now.

Thanks

With that money, you might be able to get it as fast as a stock GSX. I'd just get the GSX, because once you start modding, you won't wanna stop, and the 420a (while a reliable motor) isn't realistically a power motor. I'd get the GSX, put a 16g on it, and that should keep you happy for a while (spanking vettes and such).

I agree 80 %. :p .I don't agree with the vette part, but the rest is nicely summed up in a nutshell.

If you want speed and handling then get the gsx. Making the gs as fast as a stock gsx is going to be expensive. Also, the gsx has more potential for less money. You can probably find a 1g gsx in your price range if you seriously don't want to borrow money from your parents.

Ok, thanks for all of the responses. I live in Minnesota (it snows every once and awhile) and the AWD would be awesome too. So I think you sold me on the GSX.

I looked on carsoup for some 97-99 GSXs in my area and there is a 98 GSX with 65k miles on it for $11,500 it has an evo III 16g turbo on it, but the only other mod is an intake. The seller said the t25 blew and he went with a bigger turbo as a replacement. He doesn't even have a boost gauge though, and didnt know how much psi it was running. It kind of scared me that he was running an evo III without a boost gauge, but he also said it was professionally installed and they set it at a "moderate" boost level. What do you guys think? Should I steer clear from it, or would it be ok? I'm hoping to go test drive it here in a few days, so I'll keep you guys updated on more info.

Thanks

Sounds good, I have one question, how do you know what boost they set it to without a damn guage? Psychic powers perhaps? And they can't set it without boost control either. Check this car out from head to toe to make sure it isn't damaged.

Ok, uhm, probley a stupid question, but is there anyway that I could check the boost without having a boost gauge installed? If this car is in good shape I think it would be a great steal. Since it already has a 16g on it, but not much else, I can do the other, cheaper mods and then turn up the boost. But, I'm still kind of nervous about it not having a boost gauge. Any more thoughts....

Honestly there isn't. The factory guage isn't accurate so that doesn't count. It will probably depend on the wastegate actuator that came with the turbo to know what it is set at. If it isn't damaged, take it and then install a boost guage (40 bucks or so). I believe the standard wastegates are set around 9-10psi so you may be alright. I wouldn't turn up the boost without fuel mods (injectors, fuel pump, SAFC, and logger) past 14psi or so, otherwise your just going to junk your motor. (the 16g starts to shine around 17-18 psi)
