I'm looking into another Spyder GS because quite frankly, thats all that I can afford at this moment.(stupid teenage wage). Should I just do the work to make it a clean dd or would it be worth it to do the mod work and make it to my overall goal for my first build which is a 350-400 hp street car. I havr all the time in the world, its just money. I will though have a way better paying job after graduation. Just wondering what everyones thoughts were on this.

All the time in the world for mods. :p I dont have a car and being in school and work, I'm constantly going. Its getting hard not having a car. I can wait until after I graduate and have more money to fund a better build if thats really the ultimate way to go. I was just wondering what my options were for that motor.

The 4g64 is a strong little engine. They can be super reliable when cared for, but can still handle some decent power. Quite a few guys have made 300-350 reliably with the bone stock engine. It is very similar to the 4g63 and most parts will bolt right up.

However, I can promise it will cost more than a GST/GSX. You'll need the turbo, intake, exhaust, ECU, knock sensor, etc from a 4g63 just to even dream of over 200hp. Even then, your still limited by the head and internals. A DOHC head swap and upgraded internals could easily cost more than the car. And your even still limited by FWD...

So in the end, the Spyder GS is great for a low power DD or no-budget build. But if you want to make some real power for much cheaper, you would likely be better off saving for a stock GST/GSX.

I really want a convertible because I never got to use mine in my other Spyder. This one actually works LOL. I'll just make it into a nice little dd that'll turn heads at the beach, and save for the gsx. My ultimate goal for my first build like I said previously is to have a 350-400 hp street car. Awd just makes it that much better.

Buy it, save up. You're very first mod should be a DOHC swap while replacing the timing belt. 7 bolt heads can be had for under $200 all day and the timing belt is just part of the stage 0 mods that are required with any dsm. Then.... AWD swap it! I've got an auto AWD swapped spyder and just 2 days ago picked up the parts to awd swap my 5 speed. It's not a bad swap.

Then you've got a 2.4 AWD spyder, best of all worlds and didn't cost much more than what you'd spend building a gsx anyways.

Oh yes, you'd have to wire up a knock sensor if I remember right and maybe* an injector resistor pack? Can't remember off hand what injectors the 64 runs, but it's a direct drop in for a 4g63. If you want a real torque monster though, stick with the 64 bottom end and put a 63 top end on. They're just as strong when built, but the 2.4 will make way more torque and spool much quicker.

Yes, the 4g63 drops in. There's a bit more too it though.

Sounds good. Lots of different views on it. This coming summer is when I'll fully get into the build so I'll see where I'm at then and go from there. Right now its just loads of reading and learning. Ill make this Spyder a nifty chick magnet.

Enjoy the reliable, dailyable 64 while you save/read. Then when you're ready start going at it.

I have to agree. A spyder is still a lot of fun even if it is stock. I bought a stock high mile GST, and had a blast with it until I saved up enough money to build it right. Then I spent a year rebuilding the car top to bottom and had more fun than I could have imagined, making 450hp with the top down.

If you're looking for a spyder, why not wait for a GS-T Spyder? Then AWD swap it and you got everything you need and probably cheaper than buying a 4g64 GS then turbocharging it. I'm planning on awd swapping mine but I have to get rid of all the problems I have with it currently haha.

I went to go drive that car today and I wouldnt have taken it if she gave it to me for free. The entire interior was ripped to shreds as was the top. The front bumper was so mangled, I couldnt tell what it was and the left blinker wouldnt shut off. I havent even driven the car yet mind you. So I start it up and its smoking pretty badly from the exhaust, I pop the hood and the engine is caked in oil. Its EVERYWHERE. There were metal shavings in the oil as well. I went to drive it and it wouldnt go past 2nd gear. Let alone reverse. It felt like limp mode all over again except a manual LOL. Tax returns are coming up so I'm just going to have to stick it out until then and I'll get a gst for starters. Most dsms around my area arent crazy molested.
