Hi Guys,

I need your help please. I was giving a battery boost to my 90 eagle talon tsi awd, but tripped over tools and the pos/neg wires made contact accidently. The car turned off immediately. Gave another jump -- car was running fine, but then began to stall and/or misfire (like running on a low battery). So, I got a new battery, issue resolved until I raced today and now I have the same symptoms. Anyone have suggestions?

Right now car runs fine until you drive it hard, it starts misfiring and I can't go over 30 mph before the car begins to jerk as if i had a dead battery. It also idles really bad, but issue is not present with new battery. It seems as if the new battery I got is shot. Please tell me I can resolve this on my own. I have the car in my privately owned garage.

My assumptions are spark plugs & wires/coil pack and alternator....they probably are shot....but I want to hear opinions/suggestions.

Tx,
Gabriel

PS. I've searched forums without success.

Had a similar problem with a GM car.... 4 cylinder fiero. The car would backfire all the time, and especially when I got on it.
Took awhile, but I finally found someone (after giving up on the Pontiac people who built it) to fix the problem.

Don't know what the part was called, but the part that needed to be replaced basically told the spark plugs which order they should fire. Got it replaced and the car ran perfect. Maybe DSM autos have a similar part?

GOOD Luck!

hey thanks for the reply. I'm assuming you're referring to the coil pack. I have it ordered and will replace it. I also have a starter that I'll replace. Can anyone else help please?

Thanks!!

**Bump**

can anyone help please? should I be ok changing the power transistor/coilpack/sparkplugs and wires?

Can I get more help from you guys please? Let me know if I should be checking or replacing anything else please??

Thanks!

it sounsd to me like either your crank angle sensor (on intake camshaft near throttle body) or the ecu itself might have got zapped pretty well.

Yeah, i'd check your ecu, or o2 cuz that might be making it jerk from too much/little air making your car jerk, i don't know really about the o2 but i'd defin. check your ECU and altenator, if that doesn't work i'd try PMing 98TSiAWD

If you're getting sputtering/misfiring at more of a 65% and up throttle, it sounds like a coil pack issue.

When mine went down, it did exactly what you described. They happen to go quite a bit, I hear.

I'd go with basic things first. If spark plugs are fine and are delivering spark, move on to the wires. if they're fresh, move on to coil pack. check resistance, and move on to CAS.

Im putting money on coil pack though.

Also, how is the ground to the battery? the terminals and wires are ok?

I was racing a Mustang in my Z quite some time ago, and I jerked hard when shifting into 2nd. I ended up dislocating the battery ground, and the car was jerking, sputtering..etc.

Make sure all connections around there are acceptble as well.

::knocking on wood:: I believe this problem has been officially repaired and resolved. I wanted to give everyone an update. I replaced the power transistor, the battery, the spark plugs and wires and the alternator. The main problem that we found was the alternator being shot. From alternator searches, it seems as if DSM's go through new alternators like there is no tomorrow.

To be honest with all of you, owning my DSM has made me a full blown professional mechanic in just a few weeks. I got new problems and I'll be opening a new thread for those.

But thanks to everyone for your support and your assistance/feedback.

It was greatly appreciated!

Glad to hear its all fixed up. Oddly enough i've only replaced one alternator ever on a dsm, and my own personal car is on the factory alternator 12 years later, 130,000 + miles, and has even handled the casing being redone in flat black.
