I have the worst friggin luck ever with mitsu engines. I bought a 2g talon with a freshly rebuilt 6 bolt engine minus balance shafts and i put about 75 - 80 miles on the motor and i pulled the oil pan because it was leaking and found metal "fish flakes" scattered all over the inside of the oil pan. I figured out that it was main bearing shreds and tore it all down and the crank and block were blueish from heat. It looked like someone ran the car down a dragstrip with no motor oil in it. I never figured out why. So, I bought another 6 bolt motor from a guy that worked at slowboy racing that was in his talon. I put about 100 miles on it and it did exactly the same thing. Finally, I rebuilt the motor and had a machine shop assemble the motor. I got the motor back as a rotating assembly and bolted the head on it and put it back in the car. This motor reached 100 miles and i pulled the oil pan off, just to check and everything looked fine. I was very relieved and thought my troubles with that kind of issue were over. I put about 900 more miles on the motor and everything was good the whole time except every time i changed the oil i screened it and found very fine metal shavings in the oil, I figured that they were just a result of break in until the motor started making ticking/knocking noises. It sounded like the lifters were ticking ridiculously loud so i bought the revised lifters and put them in and it still makes the same ticking/knocking noises. It sounds like its coming from the upper end of the motor in the back(towards the firewall). Im not real sure what to think or what to do. I plan on tearing the motor apart as soon as i get a chance to see what the deal is but if you have any suggestions i'd appreciate it if you shared them. Im not sure but im wondering if its a wristpin making the noises, its not as dull as a knock, but not quite as high pitched as a ticking lifter is, but its closer to the lifter sound.

you, in fact could have numerous problems that may be the culprit of you flakes. could be cams, rod bearings, main bearings.... the list goes on..............

Did you re-toruqe everything after you heat cycled it? Does the ticking go with the rpm's? As in does it get louder and faster as you rev it into higher rpm's?

The ticking doesnt seem to get any louder as the rpms increase but it does speed up with the motor

Does it sound like that? They never posted a solution to the sound but BlckSpo0ln is still very active on the forums and if it does sound like that I'm sure you could pm him and ask him what his problem was and figure a solution.

Might not be relative but you still didn't answer if you re-torqued the studs etc and rod bolts after breaking in. This could be a large cause of metal shavings if the bearing caps are loose.

No, I didnt retorque yet. Ive only got about 1000 miles on it so far. And, i cant figure out how to view the video, but it sounds like extremely loud and somewhat dull lifter tap

Also, I sent a sample of the motor oil to blackstone labs to be analyzed after the 2nd oil change and they said there were high levels of lead in the oil.

Your suppose to re-torque after the 3rd or 4th heat cycling. As in re-torque after it has warmed up completely and cooled down completely 3 or 4 times. That could be the cause of your ticking sounds and metal shavings. Just click on the video and it should open up a new browser and start playing.

I didnt know about the retorqing situation, Thank You. I will check it out tonight hopefully. And i cant figure out how to view that video, i feel retarded.

I never figured out what was causing my problems, but i had my 4th complete rebuild done and i think its ok now
