master and slave rebuilding question

Money is tight and I hear that rebuilding the master and slave is just as good as buying new ones.

My question is this...what if the master and slaves on my car are not OEM (like autozone variety or something).

Are rebuild kits universal? I would imagine that yes they are, but I just wanted to be sure.

Its really just luck as to how well a rebuild kit will perform, Most of the time, if it was a new non oem slave/master then a rebuild kit will work fine, if its a reman unit then it gets iffy since it may have been honed during the rebuild.

I have rebuilt both with mixed results. Some are still on the road, some have lasted a few months and crap themselves. Make sure you inspect the bore for any irregular wear or scoring. I like to run a small stone hone on a drill inside the bore a couple of passes, it helps clean the walls.

I have used the aftermarket parts to rebuild the stock ones and they work.

They parts were not identical so I figure they are what is inside the complete aftermarket unit. So by that logic they ought to work, I have not done specifically what you are asking though.

Also take them apart and see how bad and why they are leaking. If the sealing surface in the bore is rusted or pitted it may seal if you can clean it up like was mentioned but if it is pitted too much then it makes no sense to even waste the time and money on the rebuild kit, just replace them.
