Manual top for spyder?

I used to have a 2G spyder and I remember how slow the top going up and down was. Currently I own and daily drive a Miata with a manual top and it literally takes less than 5 seconds to raise or lower the top.

My next project is an AWD spyder, and I was wondering how well the top system works when operated manually? I am thinking about pulling the power top parts to compensate some for the weight gain from adding the AWD system parts.

Thanks,

Keith

There is a switch in the trunk on the left hand side that puts the top motor in a neutral position. However, the top is still pretty heavy even with the springs assisting the top. The bulk of the weight (other than the top) is in the springs and hinges, so you would only be able to remove the motor while still leaving the top functional. Climbing over the seat to pull the top up would likely take more time than using the motor anyhow.

So basically, I don't think you would gain anything unless you permanently fixed the top closed and removed all the moving hardware.

I definitely want the car to remain a functional convertible. I have never manually operated a spyder top, it was my understanding that normally the motor closes the top against spring tension, and then when the motor releases tension the springs open the top. Is that not how it works? With the motor bypassed is the top hard to close and easy to open?
