I just bought a manual boost controller and im getting ready to install it. But first i want to know how reliable my stock boost gauge is. im not planning on running more then 10 psi max boost. but could that really mean 20psi? I know the stock gauge's dont have a good reputation, i just want to know if i can safely use my new boost controller with the stock gauge, Im still planning to add a aftermarket gauge later anyway i just dont cant afford one right now, I also cant afford for my daily driver to overboost and become damaged.
so if i have to wait i will. what do you guys think?

Before you do any mods what-so-ever to your car, you want to get a real boost gauge. The stocker is only an estimate by the ecu. Wait to put the mbc on until you get enough money saved up to buy a boost gauge.

The stock gauge estimates boost using the MAS reading. If you plan on putting that boost controller on, 99.99% of the members here will suggest a real boost gauge first. They are cheap and easy to install anyway so go ahead and do it first.

btw - 10psi is around the stock level

Wait till you get a boost gauge before you install that MBC. The factory gauge doesn't do you any good when raising the boost and you could hurt your car. A new autometer boost gauge can be had for like 50 bucks. If your still a little short on cash, check the classifieds.

alright, thanks for the quick replys, you say stcok boost is around 10? really? that makes my stock gauge seem very inacurate already. I did the stage 0 path listed on here and im only running 7-7.5 peak at wot though the entire rpm range.

Ok, how do you KNOW that you are pushing around 7 PSI. You cannot get any numbers from the STOCK gauge, it only has meaningless tick marks. The only way you will know is to get a real boost gauge.

I Wouldnt install the manual boost control, that being said i would buy a Boost Gauge, the Factory boost Gauge is not reliable what so ever.

mine has numbers, maybe its a 1G thing? Ill go take a couple pics.

Get a real Boost gauge 1st.

Stock PSI is about 9-10.
You can reach 11-12psi with free mods that you could do right now

After the free mods, dont do Anything until you add a boost gauge. (some even say add a boost gauge before the free mods)

Hmmm...didnt' know the 1g's came with a numbered gauge. My bad if I wrong. My 2g boosts 10PSI with the restrictor on the stock boost solenoid removed. Post the pics I'm interested to see it. Good luck.

i did the free mod thing myself too. But it was before i even had the car boosting, (arm on wastegate was off when i bought the car becuase it sheared the pin) and now that its fixed and boosting this is what it reads, pic 11 is ignition on, pic 2 is boost while at accelerating at wot

you need to fill your coolant also.

I was wondering what that light was. I wish i had a manual for this thing..
the fluids are topped off. maybe the sensor is bad, or disconected. ill check it out.

That light is one of the most common asked about lights, it's Defiants favorite LOL.

Definitely do yourself a favor and get a factory service manual, or at the very least buy a hanes/chiltons. These will pay off more than anything else you buy for the car.

Def. check for a loose connection or hacked up wiring and you should be :thumb:

My uncle had the laser daytona. It too had the actual reading on the gauge.
But it is inaccurate because of whre it pulls it from.
I got an irridecent OBX for $30 on ebay. Took 3 hours to put in and that included dremmeling the dash...
I compare it to the reading on the dash and it's totally different. The factory one takes so long to measure, it just floats around..
I get 10-12psi on my 2g.

In regards to the light, I am pretty sure that is the intercooler.
Weird though, my alt belt went yesterday and of course my charge light came on, but so did this light. It went off once I replaced the belt, but i have no ise why it went on in the first place because of an Alt belt?
Precautinary maybe. I would assume that would go off if the intake charge was too hot??? Maybe the front is clogged? Fins bent?

It has been shown time and time again that that light is the low coolant light. Do a search if you don't believe me.

That light came on because the alternator belt also turns the water pump and you were probably running dry on coolant. Check your overflow bottle, then check your radiator.

Coolant light huh...Doh. Guess I was dreaming they would put an intercooler light in there.... It's not an NSX after all...

Must be sensing pressure though because it went off immediately after my belt broke. My temp never went over the half way mark. As soon as the pump stopped moving, it went off. (Car was still runing)

Put the belt back on and never added any water, it went off.

I'm probably dreaming on the pressure thing too though huh...

i just checked my coolant in the overflow tank and it was low. When i last fill it i filled from the thermostat housing. it didnt completly fill it then, its full now and the light went off.
Thanks Eclipsetical for point out what the light is for. Im picking up a haynes manual this afternoon

Not a problem brotha, just glad to be able to give a lil something back to the community that has helped me out. :rocks:

That manual will be one of your best resources. soak up all the info it can give you. When you start to delve into serious modding i strongly reccomend picking up a factory service manual. They are on the pricey side but are oh so worth it. Chiltons/Haynes are good resources but dont' have everything that the FSM does.

Now save up for a true boost gauge and then you can worry about installing that MBC.

If you haven't already, PLEASE take the time to make sure you've got all your preventative maintenance taken care of. Nothing sucks more than throwing a new mod on and then the car shits the bed on you because you forgot to do the upkeep.

happy boostin

i just started moding my car and the first thing i got was a boost controller and boost guage with an injen intake pipe and filter. the gauge was about 70 bucks but well worth it. the guage is easy to install but it can take a while for proper installation. i would install the guage before the boost controller.
