Right now i am trying to put my piston rings together and i noticed the kit came with an extra locking ring. i dont know what it goes to and there are no instructions of how to assemble them. Does anyone know anything about these pistons. I also have a very stiff crank spin with all the caps on and touqued down to spec. any help will be appreciated

The extra wire lock is probably a mistake. Mine only came with 8 wire locks: One for each side of the wrist pin. Are you using any lube during assembly?

Are you talking about a locking ring for the wrist pin or actual piston rings? You need to get some plastigauge to check your bearing clearance. With just the crank and caps installed you should be able to spin the crank by hand. For the record DO NOT use lube when checking your bearing clearance. Even without lube the crank should spin although I don't recommend doing that.

yes im using assembly lube, its like syrup though. I am not talking about the wrist pin rings I'm talking about the set of locking rings for the pistons. they're already collapsed even when i put them around the piston. do they go under the oiler rings or something?

not to sound like an ass but you should do some serious research about building a motor if your asking a question like this.

some things to consider
ptw clearance
end ring gap
which ring goes where
tolerances
machine work to the block.
etc

Every set of pistons i have ever purchased comes with instructions. even just a set of rings should have them.

research and planning are 95 percent of a successful build. actual assembly is only 5 %

ive built engines before this just has a different/extra set of rings. the bag says theyre groove lock spacers. I've never had pistons that came with these before. the oiler rings are very lose until i fit it with these groove lock spacers but they need to be cut first before i fit them

post a picture of what you have. might be something as simple as a wrong name being used

i dont know if this will work i cant figure out how to upload photos on here. the picture of the 2 rings are the primary and secondary compression rings the one with 3 things are the oiler rings, and the single ring is the ring in question

Your picture didn't work. Right click on the facebook picture than click copy img location. From there type

from all the pics of there ring sets i can find it looks like an extra part. did you get 1 in each piston ring set?

i wonder if thats the horizontal ring lock they mention

thisis the ring in question. I don't know what its for. i looked up the part number and it says its for the 85.5mm pistons but i have 86mm

No, they aren't total seal rings. These came with the pistons i ordered from manley, plus they are overlapping eachother by like a 2mm and collapsed. The bag says groove lock spacer p/n 46387-1. I cant find anywhere even on manley itself about these things

did all the pistons come with them. there are only a few places that actually make pistons, it may have just gotten packaged wrong. my friend got two top rings in a ring set and was missing the oil scraper ring.

mistakes do happen. if you have a set of 4 of them i would call them tuesday and ask a tech

i would say leave them out as all the ring sets dont show them but just to be safe i would call. Would hate to see you have to rip the block apart over something silly like this

I would contact who ever you got them from and see what the deal it. It really looks a lot like a gapless ring setup.

That ring is a support ring for the oil control rings. Are your pistons stroker pistons? If so you need this ring because the wrist pin goes through the oil rings, and that ring supports them. Install with the bubble up, and read the directions on where to put the gap.

I know this is a little bit long ago and too late, but those locking rings go at the very bottom with the expansion and oiler rings. They are for pistons that have high wrist pins that go through the area where the oiler rings seat. It is to prevent the expansion rings from getting pulled out of its place and jammed between the cylinder walls and piston. Ijust thought I would post this for future builders just in case they ever came across this same problem.
