i was just wanting to know what the easiest way to take the exhaust manifold off is...my stud holes in my head are stripped and i need to rethread them and want to see what you guys had to say...thanks in advance!!

Adam

the only one that i dont know how to get off is the one on the bottom right...without taking off some of the brackets

PB blaster works good and start like a week ahead and spray on the bolts... it makes i 10x easier and less stressfull...LOL damn dsm

i just want to know how hard it is to take the whole thing off.....i have a bad exhaut lead because of the manifold studs being stripped

It's not hard at all. A few nuts, a few bolts and viola.

Drilling out for heli-coils will be the fun part :sneaky: a 90 degree pneumatic drill with a short bit will let you do it with the head and turbo in place (just remove the manifold and stuff a rag down the turbine housing on the turbo to keep metal from getting in it.)

could i just go to a harware store and get some bolts that are alittle bigger the the factory studs and retap the head the same size ans the bolts or no.....do i have to get bolts that can resist the heat or what

Just loosen the ps belt and remove the ps pump bracket, it will make your life much easier. The real problem you should be worrying about is the one stud on the exhaust turbine housing, assuming you're still stock like your profile said. You need to detach the o2 housing from the DP to allow some play on the turbo then wiggle the manifold and turbo as one piece out from the head studs. Make sure you replace the turbine stud with another turbo bolt as well as anti-seize on the re-install for your next encounter.

You can either Heli-coil or drill and re-tap them to the 2G 10mm studs which you can pick up at the dealership. Be really careful, there are coolant and oil passages behind some of them.

I would say its a good idea to fork out the extra money for new studs if you can go that path. When I got my car the stud which is on the bottom right was broken off flush inside...

I had to heli-coil that and MAN IT WAS FUN! Its even better to do when you don't have the right tools and have to pull the radiator (don't be scared to if you need to get in there, it makes things easy.) Either way you get to flush your radiator system then! :thumb:

I noticed a small gain in spool when I wasn't leaking from my manifold. Getting the manifold off the studs can be abit of a war once you're ready to simply PULL TOWARD YOU, and then UP off the turbo stud that goes into the manifold(unless its not connect to your downpipe, make sure you don't yank your turbo around to much... watch the lines.)

only one of my studs is snapped and its right before the head so i think all have to do is drill and tap....i will go to the dealership to she how much that crap will cost.......how do i know how far to drill into the head.....thanks for all the help!!!

First you have to drill the old stud out then look at the short end of the new 10mm stud and mark the drill bit with white out, the important thing is that you drill straight in or 90* from the head surface. Good luck.
