Making my own intake manifold

I was looking to buy a SMIM and they seem to be super expensive. I was wondering if there is anything special about them inside. Say I cut off the flange with all the fuel injector holes from the factory unit , hog it out, add runners and weld on my own body (plenum whatever it's called). Would this idea work or is there somthing super special about the name brand ones?. I have access to all the tools and equipment, so that's not a problem.

Major brain fart, the injectors go directly into the head so I wouldn't even have to deal with injector stuff. I could make one from scratch super easy.

the holes for the fuel injectors aren't in the intake manifold. I'd just say go get an ebay SIMM, i got mine for 385 shipped and it looks sweet.

Not a damn thing, but if you yourself have looked at some of those $600 SMIM you'll see there is no special bends or anything on the inside of the plenum. They are so simple in design Somebody on here had to of made there own.

I'm not saying that people haven't made their own. I know that the design seems simple as most are just a large plenum that sometimes tapers, but there are other considerations such as the runner length and the actual plenum size. Velocity stacks are also another factor. I'm not trying to stop you from doing it at all, just some things to think about.

I made my own, wasn't very hard. How well can you weld aluminum?

Well, a smim is not just a can w/ 4 tubes and a plate. Alot of r & d goes into a decent smim. If you can weld aluminum pretty well, then just fab one that looks similar to one you like. Keep the same arcs, angles, diameters and shapes. Don't sell it though. . .

It could be hard to get all that detailed info. I'm sure no vendor or builder is going to give you that info.

I think most of the vendors that make and sell smim's didn't put a lot of R&D into them, I bet you could make something that works with a little time and effort.
