Making an Airbox

I have been wanting to do this for a while and finally got some free time after chasing all the other issues with this car. Please forgive the lack of detailing, it's a work in progress.

My intake temps have always been too high with an open filter. I do have a portion of the sheet metal cut out above the intercooler from when I installed the Supra SMIC, so there is some fresh air other than the stock vent.

This was mostly to get a decent test fit. I used a 12"x18" .025" aluminum sheet to start with. I built a template form cardboard and then marked it out on the sheet. All the cuts were made free-hand with a recipricating air saw, which works great and they all turned out very straight.

I am going to line the inside with an insulated barrier and seal around the upper intake pipe tomorrow, just thought I'd post a few pictures so far.

First test drive looked good, intake temps were 73F when I started it up in the garage went for a short drive they dropped to 66F and pretty much stayed there. For comparison it was probably ~50F and raining on sunday when I was making some logs and my intake temps were 86-95F.

Nice. I'll have to attempt this some time soon? What were your temps before this mod?

Is the box only held down by the hood only since it's a covered box? Did you do any other mods in conjunction with this one i.e. cold air ducting?

It slips between the seam under the drip rail and is partially held down by the rubber stopper. It is not in their loosely so it's not going any where. There is a 1"x1.5" notch that slips over the coolant overflow bracket and it sits just below the inner edge where the factory boost solenoid mounts. There is no ducting right now, but there is a larger opening under the filter from where I installed the Supra SMIC.
