Here within the net month i willbe taking my block to have the machine work done to it. I just picked up my crank today and i asked the machineist about align honing the mains and he told me they dont do that. They will align BORE the mains for me just enough so that i can use standard size bearings. He said it will not affect the clearances and the bearings will be fine.....is this true? Ive heard some horror storys about carquest but everyone has told me these guys really know what their doing, i would just like some input on this...also im using oem main bolts not arp's...if i knew this was true i would of purchased arp's to begin with...but theirs no point in me going through the hassele of returning them and getting something else...

there is no such thing as an align hone of the mains.

are these new mains or used ones?

when you align bore the mains it may or may not change the id of the main caps more likely it will change the size.

if it changes the id of the mains then you will have to buy bearings that are "undersized" i think but dont quote me on this.

align boring of the mains is a good thing to do if you don't want to have any bearing issues with a different crank. it is way different than cutting a crank.

as far as running oem bolts goes. aslong as your not shooting for anything under 10s i don't think it would be an issue

It puts the bore of the mains into spec. A small amount is ground off the caps, to make the bore smaller. Then the mains are torqued down, they are then bored back to factory spec. The only problems people can have if done properly, is the crank centerline is moved towards the deck a couple .001's of an inch. It can change valvetrain geometry, and it moves the crank up in the front and rear seals.

that's why you will wanna get it bored lets say .10 over and you can get bigger bearings that keep the crank in the same exact location as oem spec.

1995gsx20g.. can you please provide the part number for any over sized OD main bearings for the 4g63?? Also they do Align hone.. depends on what equipment and the amount to be removed..

donnoiekak is correct, they cut material from the mating surface of the main cap so most of the is removed from the cap not the block

if your caps are the ones from that block(the ones the factory installed) and the main bearing shells did not spin in the bore, why do you think you need to align hone/bore your mains?

LiquidX.. thanks for posting that link....

YA i just read that link today. Its a good read.. They make oversized mains if the crank is cut but they won't make the actual main journal bigger..

so your saying if i never had a spun bearing, or didnt cut the crank i wont need it honed/bored....my crank was in good shape when i picked it up and i got them to polish and clean it for me....also the bearings were in really good shap when i pulled them

my mistake. i know they have undersize bearings for domestics and i thought they did for the 4g63 but i guess some manufactures don't all have the same use of the word undersize.

i have never heard of an align hone, sorry i posted that. just when you think you know, you really don't.

again i apologize

The under sized bearings for a 4g63 are for a cut crank, they are all based on a standard journal size. An align hone is done to resize the mains to a stock size when only .003" or less is required to be "honed" with a honing bar to bring them into spec. If you have mismatched caps, an align bore is needed to remove more than .003" of materal to bring the bores into spec.

herms.... just so you know... when you have your crank ground, you do not have to have the block align honed/bored
the OD of the bearings do not change just the ID of the bearings due to metal being removed from the crank, not the block.

Now if you put in new main bolts or a new girdle then you'll need to be honed to be sure of 100% roundness at proper torque specs. I needed mine done after getting ARP bolts and the Kiggly girdle on my 6 bolt build.

appreciate the help....yall save me some dollas LOL. I just thought it was standard practice but apparently i was wrong...my crank was not ground only polished due to the fact that it was in good shape...possibly the only good thing that has came out of this build LOL...so now my machine work will consist of a rebore using my jmfab torque plate....a resurfacing of the deck, and a nice cleaning....is their ne thing else i should do?

if your going to run a MLS headgasket.. have the head gasket deck checked or milled for it

what do youmean by "deck checked" or "milled for it"? I know the gasket was calling for a certain finish. it was a 50ra are finer. I said something to the machinist about it and he said they do have the machine to do this...is that what you r tlking about?

that the machinist checks the head gasket surface of the block..

they have the machine? did he tell you what kind of machine?

this is about heads but still applys to blocks...

read the parts that you are having done! I have added to it at the bottom about surfacing equipment

Thanks agin BIG WOO!

then make sure your head or block does not get BELT SURFACED!!
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/cyl...0613-why-not-let-your-head-belt-surfaced.html

and the way your head/block needs to look

when i picked up my crank the other day i said something to the machinist about resurfacing my deck so i could use the mls gasket. I also aksed if they use a belt sander and he said no that he would machine the surface to the recomended finish and could make it look like a "mirror"...i guess the same way my main and rod journals look on my crank....also do you do this kind of work? and if so do u do head work? jw cause it would b nice for someone to re work my head that knows these motors like urself

good deal you asked... glad they will not use a belt surfacer.

to run a MLS it has to be Mirror like.
