I am in the process of building a GSX. I have ordered 680cc's and the GM MAF/MAFT. I also have a AFC, but will probably be a while after the car is finished before i put it in the car. I am just going to start with the MAFT. I have it set up in a blow through set up on the UICP. I have a wb 255 pump.

Are the initial instructions that come with the MAFT good enough to get me running, or will i need to tune it out so i won't cause any internal damage.

I also read and was told that i should turn the knob to one injector size up or down-i forgot which, cuz at the instruction settings if u choose the injectors you actually have, it will be running pig rich. Can someone elaborate on this too that has experience.

I set mine up as per the instuctions that came with it. Each click of the knobs changes it by 5%, but I heard that a new version is coming out with finer changes. I would get it close with the MAFT and fine tune with the AFC. They are doing it by two different formats The MAFT goes by air flow and load and the AFC by RPM's. Your base is the most crusule setting as it affects all others.
I'm still playing with mine since my o2 craped out on me while tunning.

I just said i had one...i didn't say i know how to use it. LOL

for real though, this will be my first time tuning, so i really don't even know what numbers i should be looking for.

I have fic 650 injectors, supra tt,afpr from full throttle ,b and m pressure gauge and maft and 3 inch gm maf.I am still on 14 b.50 trim not installed yet.
The car will run on the base settings set to the injector sizes specified in instructions and with all dials zero.It should start and idle not too bad and might be a bit doggy wot and not spool up quite as fast if its rich but it will start and run.

Then you are supposed to set base and watch trims.Drive around for bit not sure how long..think day or so.And if they are in range think usually around 100 to 110 % on our 1gs then you set idle trim to also be around this range. And then wot to try to get low/no knock and think most guys try for around .90 to .92 o2 heard the 90 cars read a bit different and under 1600 I think if you have egt gauge.

I have a major weird problem with trying to tune my car.My o2 sensor which I just changed out for a universal ngk one will only go up to like .80 and won't go higher no matter where I set my maft yet pretty sure the car is getting richer as it gets very doggy.I had ground strap removed when exhaust was put on and hear the ground strap on the exhauast is important for proper o2 operation and output numbers so will see if thats true when get car out of shop and get chance to log it.

Had a bad wheel bearing wreck trailing arm, stubby axle, axle flange, caliper, caliper bracket and pads and rotor.Ouch..!!!:(

thanks for the info guys, keep it coming, any links will be appreciated. I have been reading some damn good information i found about logging, but it was actually in the script of a "how to tune your AFC" article. It broke down every thing stupid style for me and I comprehended a lot of it and i should be good to go, at least to get her running and get my trims right, egt's, and knock down to where they need to be.

What's the difference in the AFC and the MAFT?

when running both, and tuning with both, if you are tuning one, will it throw the other one way off?

I'm guessing i should start off base line tuning with the MAFT, then fine tune the injectors with the AFC.

???? is this what i should be doing, it seems to me to make sense?

The afc and maft work essentially the same way. The afc is rpm/tps based whereas the maft is load based for its point of refence in map selection.

The two will play nicely.

Yep, you are on the right track.

Most guys set maft zero and then tune with safc. Its got more precision.
The new maft should be a bit better version 2.0.I think I will be getting an aem ems next year but will see.

Their is a maft tuner board..yahoo something. They have files of maf instructions and tuning tips extra.I belong to the list but don't post on it all that often.

I am having problems tuning with the maft right now.Not necessarily due to the maft but mabye due to a bad new o2 sensor or from taking off the ground wire on my exhaust.

Will be retesting car with ground wire reconnected and if that fails to fix my weird o2 only going to .83 max problem then likely change out o2 also.
