MAF Silencer???

I was reading a post on CarDomain when I saw that some kid had removed a MAF silencer on a 90 DSM N/T. How can you do that and does it make it sound better??

i'm not sure about the 1990 models but mine was just a paper filter thing at the bottom of the MAF. I had to remove the maf from its base then the silencer just comes out. it makes the intake sound a little louder but no real performance gain.
