I am assuming the sending unit is of course acting stupid but, I was wondering if this is a common issue like the fuel pump circuit for instance.

i know.. very very common for dsm is good ol' rusty top of the fuel tank and that the sending unit adds to it.. double check your wiring connections on the top of the fuel tank for rips tears and corrosion might just be the problem.. if not.. could just be the sending unit taking a poo also if you have happen to do a fuel pump rewire that you double check that you did everything correct
