i bought a 92 talon awd last week for 3500 and a couple hours after having it i had a massive oil leak. come to find out the guy before me took it to a valvoline and they put the wrong filter on it. changed the filter out and filled it back up with oil. started it and it ran perfect no lifter tick at all, took it for a spin and all was great. the next day i was cruisin down the road and out of nowhere it starts making a really loud tapping sound that sounds like its in the valvetrain near the cam gears. when im driving between idle and 2900 rpms you can here it clear as day, but when i take it to 3000 and up not one noise is made. ive searched for hours tryin to find a solution but i havent had any luck. any ideas on what it would be?

unfortunatly not. i dont have a camera and i have a piece of shit phone. LOL
if you youtube bad balancer shaft thats what it sounds like but my noise goes away

Check the oil for metal shavings. If the leak was bad enough it may have starved it for oil.

Also since it's by the cam gears how is the tension on the timing belt?

there are 0 metal shavings in the oil, and the t belt has a little bit of slack but nothing too serious. would the t belt tensioner make that noise if it was going bad?

Sounds like you might have a new lifter tick, possibly stretched. Lucas has some sort of additive that will bond to the parts of the motor even on cold starts and help with that. It is worth a shot, used it on the wife's BMW for five years.

Haha I put that Lucas stuff in it but it didn't seem to do anything. My guess is it's not in the valvetrain. But it's nothing in the bottom end. So it's got to be somethin like a bad tensioner.
