I have a 92 TSI fwd w/ 136K and manual tranny. The problem that I am experiencing is kind of two parts. I have typical lifter noise (they are the originals) but it seems that the "ticking" has gotten louder and more pronounced and does this on almost every startup, even on considerably warm days when it is not as necessary. After a few minutes of letting the engine warm up the ticking will go away... then my next problem. For the first few minutes of driving there is a loud squeeling/squeeking noise, but only under heavy acceleration. I am confident that this noise is coming from the engine and originally thought it to be belts slipping, after using belt dressing I came to the conclusion that it is not a belt making the noise after all. A friend riding in the car suggested that the noise might be some sort of bearing. Once the car has warmed up to normal driving temperature, the squeeling goes away altogether. Thanks for any help :)

I have both these problems. I'm going to clean my lifters soon probably in the next couple weekends. I also believe it's a bearing, and I think I've narrowed mine down to the bearing on the air conditioning pump pulley. I'm not sure if just this bearing can be replaced or what needs to be done about it. I thought about pulling it apart to see what was going on, but have yet to. If you think this same bearing is your problem, let me know what you decide to do about it.

The problem seems to be your oil. You very well can be running to thick of oil because when your oil is cold it is thick and it doesnt get as much threw the oil passage ways so it takes longer for yourlifters to get oiled up. So if you run a 10w 30 that should help out a lot and it that doesnt work another thing could be your oil pump.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I run 10w30 so I know it can't be too thick. The weather where I live has gone from cold to warm over the past week so I have noticed that although the temperature outside is warm the lifters still continue to make a racket. I will look into the A/C pulley bearing as well as the crank pulley... :thumb:

Just an update on my part. I had horrible squeeling, and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Removed the crank pulley, and it was in good shape. Put it back on. Friend came over and helped me try to find where the whine and ticking was coming from, sound like from the exhaust manifold. Removed heatshield. 2 broken manifold bolts. The exhaust leak was causing a chirping/tapping noise on acceleration, (also caused it to whine). The leak was worst on the timing belt side of the manifold, which is what made me suspect crank pulley. 38 cents later the horrible noise was gone, and turns out I'm lucky enough not to have lift tick too :) . Just a heads up, you should seriously check into it, as I have read a few times now that these bolts like to break. I talked to an exhaust guy, and he told me to be careful putting new bolts in because the exhaust manifold would possible be warped due to the extreme temps it reaches, luckily, I was able to tighten it down enough to form a good seal. Just be careful not to strip it if you find this is the problem. Good luck!
