There are too many options to search when rebuilding/swapping the head. Plus I dont know all the options I have while the head is off. With that out of the way here is the situation. I have a 97 TSI AWD 5 speed with 165k on it. The car has 3" turboback, hard intake and intercooler pipes, pump rewire etc etc.. The car is losing compression in cylinder #1. Here are the numbers.
4 3 2 1
200 200 160 60PSI
I did a wet test and no increase in PSI at all. Next, I finally found a shop that would do a leakdown test for me. After getting the test I was getting 80% leakdown thru the exhaust valve in #1.
Next thing I am trying to find out is what are all the things I can do to bump up the performance while I have the head off. I have a 90 TSI parts car sitting so I can get any parts from that I want. * Im not doing a 6 bolt swap* I never replace anything until I have to. The bottom end on this motor is still good, having mostly highway miles. I have read many forums saying the 2g head is better because of this..and the 1g head is better because of this. I am just trying to get some info from people who have been in the same situation and what I can do to get more power out of my car. From what I read its not worth porting a 2g head because it would take lots of porting just to match the 1g head. I just have alot of confusion from ready thru forum after forum and just want to hear some input from experienced DSM owners who HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE. Thanks for any help. Please keep this post open because I am sure I will have lots of questions in the process of taking it apart and getting it back togeather. As I found out SOLID facts as to what I should do I will start ordering the Head Gasket and ARP Studs. Thanks for any help, I appreciate it
