I have read through and notice there really isn't much talk about crate motors. So on the way back from the body shop I spun a bearing and to be honest the motor was beginning to "walk":ohdamn: So I have decided to get a "pre-built" motor. I've been looking around and really the only ones I have found that are longblocks ready to drop in the car is from theDsmGraveyard.com Was just wondering if anyone else has any other places I should look to get a better idea of what I'm looking for. I know this is a repeat of a previous thread but again nothing about crate motors since 10-18-2011. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :banghead:

ps. From my profile you can see that I drive (tow) a 1997 gst and haven't decided if I want to go with a 6 bolt or 7. Was leaning more towards a 7 since it's a crate and won't have the "crankwalk" issue that we all hate. Any suggestions will be taken into consideration.

6 bolts almost never "walked." And the whole "walking" issue on 7 bolts is used more often than not by people who don't actually know what it means. My suggestion: buy a stock-rebuilt short block, new timing kit, and be on your way. :thumb:
Places to look into: JAM (Jackson Auto Machine) or Magnus.

Thank you for that. So you don't think it would be in my best interest to buy a $3500 crate. Instead just buy a new shortblock?

My car has a 7 bolt in it and like i said for the replacement motor i didn't know if it mattered since i was going to get a new longblock

Short-block is much cheaper. You already have everything else on your motor. Swap the head and everything over to the new short-block, install new timing parts and be on your way.

Crank....walk..... :tease:

:ohdamn:

Have you tested crank endplay to back this up?

Most of the vendors on here will build you a good shortblock. Stay away from dsmgraveyard at ALL costs.

Yes crank end play was progressively getting worse and I was looking into buying a new shortblock after all my paint was done. Ended up spinning a bearing on the way home... like 6 blocks away....

So let me ask a new set of questions. I have 3 options here. I can get my block reconditioned and hope the crankwalk doesn't come back, I can buy a 6 bolt long block for $680 and do the swap (has ~110,00miles), or I can get a new short block and use my heads. Just looking to get some opinions since I really won't be able to do much until I get my taxes back in March!

Well Like I said priviously I would like to get my car running and haven't decided if I should go with a shortblock and head config so i can get both of them refinished or if I should go with a long block and get it all in one package. So far I have quite a bit done to the care but it is only bolt on's nothing interal with the motor so really this is the last thing I need. Let me know opinions please and thank you!

If you are going with an OE rebuild I would just get a short block and swap your head onto it. If you want a forged bottom end and have the extra cash it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the head built as well but it is not necessary.
