logging with a 96 ecu

ive been researching and reading about what loggers to get and now im confused....... i have a 96 gst and was looking to get a logger but some said that the logging rate is vary slow..... my question is can i log with the current ecu i have right now or should i get a different ecu? i understand that 98/99 ecu is reflashable but i have nearly no money right now and just need to know if you can log with the 96 ecu. thanks for any advice

Yes, since the 1995/96 ECU's log on top of the OBDII protocol they are VERY slow. They are great for checking fueltrims, sensors, etc, but if you are going to try to datalog you can't realistically log more than 1 or 2 things at a time. Its pretty bad. Unless you have a 1G CAS, or have the ECU modded, you can't run the 1998/99 ECU in your 1996.

You can get that cable on ebay for around $10. With that cable, you can use Evoscan to log; it will work with the newer cars such as Evo8's as well. On the 96 ECU it will have a pretty low logging rate (around 10 samples/sec), but most OBDII loggers are even slower and can't log nearly as many things (such as all-important knock count).

No, the problem is that the 1995/96 MUT protocol rides on top of the OBDII, so it is VERY slow. Its not a limitation of the cable or the software, just the poor implementation by Mitsubishi.

just curious how many people have tried using the 98/99 ecu in their 96/97 and had it not work? reason i ask is that the EVO8 ecu is a direct drop in for the 98/99 cars and with only a couple extra wires i am running one in my 96, and if i am not mistaken there are a couple of others doing it also.

All I do for swapping ECU's between 95/96 & 97-99 cars is swap the spark plug wires and injector wires and haven't had any issues.


Logging will be exactly the same whether you use the cheapo VAG COM, openport 1.3, or openport 2.0. The cable isn't the problem, it is the ECU like jeffo explained above. I only got around 8-10 samples/sec on 95 EPROM ECUs. The 98-99 reflashable ECU's log at about the same rate as the Evo8-9 ones do. Even at those faster logging rates, the cheapo cable logs at the same rate as the OP 1.3u.

Unless you are planning to reflash (plastic ECU's only), the expensive openport cables are a waste of your money when a $10 cable can do exactly the same job. Also I took a fried OP 1.3U cable apart (new and it fried within minutes of plugging it into the car), and was extremely unimpressed with the workmanship; it was fragile and home-made looking IMO. My cheapo cable actually looks nice. I now have an openport 2.0 cable, and it looks like a very nice piece.

and before i do get it i would like to hear from some ppl with the 96 ecu's before i put the money into this, any opinions or anything at all would be nice, i jus wanna know what im gonna have to look forward too

i bought my evoscan cable before i installed the EVO8 ecu in my 96... like everyone else has said already it works but is really SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWWW... but it works. i honestly couldn't tell a difference between it and my cheap-o OBD2 scanner/logger. if you don't have a cheap OBD2 logger yet, i say get this $10 cable and the $25 for evoscan. at least this way you can log knock.
