Logging Knock on the 2G

Alright, so I read everywhere that you can't log knock on a 2G, but nowhere have I caught WHY... they have a knock sensor, it reports to the ECU... with a DSMLink could you log knock? Is it just the pocketloggers, or what? *if* I want to watch knock, is there a way? Can I splice a LED off the knock sensor and have it flash when I get knock or something?

The answer is simple. The ODB II protocol doesn't support it, or at least that the answer given out when the 2G first came out.

As to your LED question, the knock sensor is a type of microphone that allows he ECU to listen to the engine. The ECU then decides if it's hearing sounds during the right times with the right sounds to be knock. I'm sure you were thinking the sensor sent a signal saying knock or no knock.

Yes, unfortunately, Mitsubishi decided not to include the knocksum address in the diagnostic interface, although the address is there in the ECU. If you had a 1995 EPROM-type ECU, you could probably swap the knocksum code with a different variable that you didn't care about to log it. Or, I display the knocksum on the boost gauge in my 2G chip.

I know this is more of a band-aid to tell, but when you start to pull timing isn't that when you start to knock?

Yes, pulled timing is generally knock.

Yes currently the only way to log/read knock on a 2G is with DSMLink. The makers of ecu+ have said that their new version will include a knock feature, but I guess well have to wait until it comes out to see if it does & if it works, as ecu+ works through the obdII port unlike dsmlink.

I"m almost positive you can log knock on the AEM on the mitsubishi. Although i haven't used the one on the mitsu to log knock i have gotten it to work on he supra AEM box. They should all log the same inputs and such.

Evoscan will read knock on a 2g. its just on the 95-97 the baudrate wont be as quick as on the 98-99, Mitsu H8/500 ecu’s can log data at the baudrate 15625 that evo 8 and 9’s log data at. Here is a link to a thread read post #14 and 16.
