its finally a nice day and I'm up early so i wanted to finish up the engine rebuild. The engine it self its pretty much stock, the car is a 95 talon TSI. the problem I'm having is with the final toque on the head. i remembered reading that going 20, 50, 80 was a good lbs to use so i tried that, everything is fine with 20 and 50 but when i try to go 80. the first bolt tightens up fine but the next two i tried seemed to just want to spin. i loosened it all and checked those two bolts and i don't see any signs of it pulling threads out of the block. I'm worried about trying to keep tightening the bolts and possibly damaging something, I've got way to much cash into this car to break something because of stupidity. Any ideas?

did you buy new head bolt? if you reuse the old ones there is a big chance that the threads have stretched over the years. also if you did get new head bolts make sure they gave you the right ones just remember you don't have to know anything about cars to work at a parts store LOL. if everything checks out and its all right get a feeler gauge and star checking thread size and pitch in the holes if you have to pull the head back off and inspect the bolt holes try screwing in the bolts very easy and check for play there may be a little but if you have a lot you may be in trouble.

LOL well i'm not going to say i know a anywhere near everything about cars but i do know a "decent bit" i did order in new bolts, i didn't want to bother with using the old ones and worry about them having be stretched. well i guess I'm just going to pop the head back off and and do the check for play thing. the engine is still on my stand in the garage so its not a big deal pulling it back off. If any one else has some input i'll gladly read what everyone has to say. Heading off to work after i post this so i'll check back tonight, and see about getting the head back off

Are the bolts spinning with your hands or just loosening up? When you torque on bole the others will loosen up a little. if you have a tap and die set it wouldnt be a bad idea to run a tap into the holes in the block. Also if you dont tighten the head in the right pattern you can warp the head, use a cris cross pattern. This is the pattern i use

8 6 1 3 9
10 4 2 5 7

no it really just feels like the bolts are stretching. For the most part that looks like the pattern i was using as well. I'm starting to wonder if there's not something wrong with the new bolts them selves. maybe its just me wishing but I'm going to try swapping bolt placement and see if that makes any diff and re-compare the length of all the bolts when i take the head off and start checking things

I know it's hard to describe what exactly you're feeling when you turn the bolts but when you torque them down to the next level they WILL turn. It shouldn't be turning 3-4 full revolutions but it may turn a full revolution. Are you using any lubrication on the threads? I know on the ARP head studs you have to or you'll get binding and it'll throw off your torque readings but I'm not 100% positive on stock bolts. I do know that it's a bad idea to re-use stock bolts though!
