Hey everyone, this is my first post on here. But been doing a lotttt of reading for the last couple weeks. I recently just purchased my first dsm, 97 eclipse gst all stock minus b.o.v...supposedly rebuilt motor butttt who knows if that's true.

Anyway now to my question, I've read about this numerous times buttt haven't really found an answer. When my car is at an idle it makes a decently loud tick/tap sound. I believe that it is lifters butttt I'm not really sure because
Most people that have a lifter problem is usually
Only at a cold idle. Mine is kindaaaaa random, sometimes it's loud sometimes it's quiet sometimes I barelyyyyy hear anything at all even after a full warm up. If I rev the motor once it hits about 1500-2000 rpms I don't hear it anymore even if I'm controlling throttle under hood.

Sooo basically I would like to know if this still sounds like a lifter situation or something worse. Car runs and drives perfect with no hesitations. Perfectly smooth idle, 18-19 vacuum at idle and will boost to 12 pounds no problem.

If maybe a video of the sound would help I could try and take 1 tomorrow
And post on YouTube with a link for you guys. Any help on this would be great. I already jumped the gun and ordered revised 3G lifters.

Thanks!!!

if it was a rod knocking it wouldnt go away when revs pick up. Look at the dsm vfaq about lifter tick and what you can do to help reduce it

Sounds like lifters to me, mine did it no matter if it was cold or warm. The 3g lifters fixed my tick. Also, if you are running stock MAS make sure that new BOV is recirculated, it might sound cool but it will just make your car run like crap.

Sounds like a lifter tick issue to me. The only other things that can sometimes sound like lifter tick is and exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold gasket or a bad timing belt tensioner. You should be able to tell the approximate area of the noise with your head under the hood though. I'd bet that your 3g lifters will fix your problem. Good luck:)

Seems to me like you answered your own question ;).. Sounds like lifters, you would hear a knocking noise and its very distinctive.. You can hear the knocking around 2.3k-2.8k rpms.. the tapping is most likely your lifters..

And you already ordered the 3gs... so i don't need to recommend them to you..

Awesome guys, your making me feel better about the situation already :p
And yeah defffff not a rod knock I've watched many YouTube videos and mannnn if I heard that sound coming from my car I know I wouldn't be driving to work everyday LOL!!!

Small exhaust leak is always possible butttt really sounds like it's coming from the top left of the valve cover.

Timing belt tensioner is also possible, good thing I already got an oem belt & tensioner along with a few other goodies sitting in my bedroom waiting for the day they can get put on!

Oh and final thing with the bov, it's not recirculated, it's blocked off with a rounded peice of wood. I know sounds ghetto but it's not going anywhere, that really affects driveability??? Can't say I've noticed anything odd.

Honestly just hoping it's not a valve tapping. Can't wait to get the timing cover off and make sure everything is good. But I really don't think the car would run as smooth as it does orrr pull 18-19 pounds vacuum at idle LOL

The problem with the BOV not recirculated is that the MAS accounts for that extra air going back into the intake...so in return more fuel is added. So when it venting to atmosphere when you let off to shift its probably super rich. It can sometimes lead to bogging or even dying.

Ahhh good info man, I'll have to look into that or see what I can do. What kinda mas has to be ran to not have to recirculate? GM?

Yeah, nothings better than getting into boost, letting off, starting to apply the brakes, and the car stalls.:toobad::ohdamn: Been there...Done that:|:coy:

Yeah I have actually had that happen to me where the car stalled after boosting then hard brake. Was wondering why and
Now I know!!! Haha

Thanks guys!! Appreciate the help and new info
