I have the stock small hole at the top, and Ive been soakinng them in acetone for 2 days, now I'm trying to clean them like the vfaq, but I have questions I cant find in the search.

Should the lifters be able to compress by hand without the paper clip?

I have 5 that wont compress at alll, and the rest will easily compress in my fingures without a paperclip.

If I use a needle, is there anything in there I may wreck?, like a rubber seal or something I can puncture?

They will only compress by hand if they're empty. Once you stick the paperclip in, turn them upside down, and pump them this will empty them out. Then you should be able to compress all of them by hand. A needle should be fine to use, but I imagine a paperclip would be easier on the hands.

I personally don't think it is worth the hassle to clean the original lifters. I cleaned the lifters in the motor I rebuilt for my winter beater and as soon as winter came around they began to clack. I look back and I ask myself "why the hell wouldn't you replace them?" Oh well, they won't be getting replaced anytime soon, I can't justify pulling a valve cover that is sealing perfectly haha :p
They aren't too expensive either.

OK, apperantly i wasnt putting the needle down far enough..

I had an old seized lifter from my screwed head, and ripped the cap off..and wow,

I guess i wasnt puching far enough...cause ince I out the lifter back together and put the needle all the way, it collapsed easily!

I have the head off the car and cleaning it, so unless there is some wear on the lifter, I dont see why it would need to be replaced, I cleaned the lifters and now they act like the should new..mabye the springs are worn , but this head was rebiuld profesionally 2 years ago with new lifters..but the guy I got the motor from ran really rich and carbonized the valves really bad..plus one lifter would colaps when I rotated the cam, and he said he wasgetting low compression on that cylinder. so hopefully I fixed the problem.

If it still clcks when the car is put back together, then fine I will buy new ones.

My 1G lifters use to have the usual click loud as hell problem. After running the car on E85 for several thousand miles they no longer make any noise. I did not think alcohol in the oil would clean them out this fast, but the engine has 170K on it so a lot of E85 must be making it by the rings??

stace, just so you know the lifters WILL make noise when you start the engine up for the first time. When we put new lifters in my brothers car it took a few days for the noise to go away, then they stayed quiet.

I am doing a rebuild and had some questions about if upgrading to 3g lifters was worth the money. The answers that I got were:

Original lifters make noise that can be interpreted by your knock sensor as knock, and your ecu will pull timing.
The difference in the noise alone is worth the money.

I just ordered a set from a site sponsor.
