Was doing some e85 34psi pulls on my stroker and the head lifted and killed the gasket, this was on standard ARP stud's at 90ftlbs with a Mitsubishi composite gasket, coolant all in cyl 4...

Now I know people highly believe in l19s but was this really the standard ARP stud's fault? I find it hard to believe the studs are to blame.

BUT my main question and I know this is highly controversial and everyone has their own opinion about it so I would like to just gather everyone's thoughts. I have at the house now both a Mitsubishi MLS and a Felpro perma MLS, the block was resurfaced a few months back and the head looks to have never been surfaced... Thinking I can get away with them not both being surfaced but skeptical... Thoughts?
 
The reason the composite failed I believe is because the studs were only at probably 60-70 ft lbs if that, I had torqued them to 90 but it was when the motor was hot and I believe they backed off a good bit cause when I removed the head they werent extremely hard to break loose like 90-100ft lbs should be.
 
I agree about checking head, and how the surface looks, bogusSVO has posted pix of heads and ocks that has previously been BELT SANDED which he had to fix. For what it's worth i run standard arps and on an hx40 i ran 38psi and havnt had issuesx my head -and block were milled flat.
 
Honestly OP you should've just spent $40 for another composite if you didn't want to get the block and head surfaces checked for straightness, level, and proper RA(all required) for an MLS. Without knowing for sure your chances of still having the proper surfaces, you've wasted the MLS as I'm willing to bet(I'm sure most would agree) that's your current problem. Pull it apart, have your surfaces checked, and either get both surfaces prepped to run an MLS, or after you make sure it's all straight, throw another composite in there and torque the headstuds properly.
 
It's not going to run hot or push coolant, but when it starts seeing more than one atmosphere of pressure(or more) in a 47cc combustion chamber, is when all of this(surface RA, level, finish, etc) begins to be important.
