Anyone know what this is? I think it’s the intermediate shaft seal. My transmission or transfer case is leaking alot.

Looks like the driver side cv axle seal. Go to stm or jnz’s website and pick one up.

I’d try to clean up the end of the intermediate shaft a little around the seal area before you put in back in with a new seal.

You are missing the “crank walk” transmission bolt as well.

The halfshaft (intermediate shaft, whatever name you want to use) looks like it is not fully installed, or it has a worn out bearing assembly flopping it around, or the bolts that attach the halfshaft bracket to the block are loose, or someone swapped the wrong one in. There should not be an air gap between the shaft and the seal. Pull off your downpipe and transfer case and get better access to the area to deduce what is going on with the halfshaft. The halfshaft bracket mounts to the block or to the AC bracket depending on the years as there are a few variations. There are specific bolts that are used to mount it with lock washers. They are pilot point M10x1.25 x42mm bolts and M10 lock washers - 2x MB297860, 2x MF450406. Some used a spacer to mount to the block, MB297732, or it would mount to the AC bracket and the block. We would need to see much better photos of the alignment of the halfshaft to the block from a couple different views to see what is going on.

The axle seal that the halfshaft is leaking from is MD719710. There is a specific orientation it should be installed into the transmission; there is an identifier detent on the outside flange of the seal that should be facing the 12-o-clock position towards the circular dimple on the casting of the transmission bellhousing.

As well, yes, you are missing the rear bellhousing mounting bolt that goes through the block and into the transmission. It is a very specific bolt, though the bolt hole on the block is threaded, the bolt is actually a smaller diameter M8x1.25 pitch x 60mm length, MD706012.

Ok thank you so much, I’m pretty new to DSM cars and need all the help. Thanks for being so detailed!
