ALright i'm working on my buddies 1994 Talon Tsi with a 6 bolt swap done to it. Lots of upgrades to it to make it a 14b turbo since it is an automatic transmission car. The car when we start it up has problems with the engine it is the LOUDEST lifter noise i've ever heard that doesn't go away with increased RPM's but gets worse. Took valve cover off but do not know how to check the lifters to see if they are ok. I did the ususal see if they shook around but they were all in place.. The problem with this car is he put Mid-grade fuel in about two months ago and it has been sitting. Valve tap has always been a problem with this car but the ticking now has gotten way worse. THe problem that I'm afraid of is that there is this loud KNOCK like a lead hammer hitting the block and im afraid that a bearing has spun, rod, piston rings fried, timing off... anything like that.... but i wanted to know what people's opinion was on this I am open to any suggestions  .... THANKS GUYS!!!!!... later

First thing that comes to mind is the rod....buddy had that noise and ignored it...2 days later he threw a rod through the engine block.

Could be a spun rod bearing or your timing is off causing your cams to smack and not roll.
Check your timing first and foremost. Make sure you're good in that department.
The only way to "check" your lifters is to remove them. It only takes a couple of hours to do and usually you can find the noisest lifters first by putting a piece of hose in your ear and the end length around the valve cover, probing for the louder sound.
