. To make a quick story I just picked up a 2g gst out if time a couple teeth with a low mileage short block. It was making a loud tapping sound in the top end it sounded like to me. It never got drove that way. Well I pulled it apart checked the timing it was about 3 teeth out so I timed it put on a new hydrolic tensioner and started it and got the same tapping noise. Sounds like its near #1 cylinder so I pulled the valve cover and checked the lifters and looked at the valves the best I could and didn't see anything so I done a compression test also got about 140 from cylinders 1-3 and 4 had about 120. Which I've been told is OK for now. But I can't figure out the noise. I had been suggested that it could be a rod but it sounds up high to me. So I guess I'm going to drop the pan and check my rods this week. But also when I was doing the timing belt I noticed my oil pump sprocket was snug. U could still turn it fine but it wouldn't do the dropping counter clockwise trick because it was so tight. I've read that it could be my balance shaft bearings. What is you guys suggestions?

Sounds a lot like lifter tick to me. Nothing really to worry about, just annoying if youre picky about those things, I am to say the least. Is it more when the car first starts or just stays going but comes and goes as the motor reaches its operating temp? A lot of people put in 3g lifters and it takes care of the problem. Also, a thing to look into is what kind of oil are you running? I recently just switched from mobile 1 10w40 to Brad Penn 20w50 and it seemed to take away the issue for me.

This is more than lifter tick although I wish it was. It sounds like if the valves were tapping the pistons but they don't seem to be. I wish I could post my video for people to hear its pretty loud and not safe to drive it sounds

Here's a quick video of it if it works

Watch your SHIRT!

it may be your lifters. or your HLA is going bad.

try swapping them out for the 3g revised lifters.

I got the video to slow down some but had to shorten it. Had to edit out the watch your shirt LOL. I looked at the lifters but didnt pull them out and check them. I couldnt push down on any of them but that doesnt mean crap. And pardon my brain fart but what is the HLA.

Sounds completely like lifter tick. Like stated try swapping for revised 3g lifters and if that doesn't do it then you know it's something else. Are you planning on doing a tear down anyways. If so, that's when you'll really be able to get a good look and see if it's in fact something other than the lifter.

Id like to not have to do a tear down but im running out of options. But i know someone local that actaully has a set of 3g revised lifters that i may try. I woud love if thats what it is. The car set for about 6 months before i got it and when i first went and looked at it the exhaust was off it and i didnt hear the tapping but when i got it home and started it thats when i heard it and shut it off. the guy said he shut it down when he heard it also. He bought a used short block and swapped the head over to the new one. I will try getting ahold of the guy with the 3g lifters tomorrow and get them hopefully. Im hoping its not a rod bearing. I had a friend thats spun his rod bearing in 3 diffeernt motors tell me his sounded the same but lower on the motor. Mine you can hear up high better than underneath

Yea I done a compression test. Cylinders 1-3 had 140 and cylinder 4 had 120. So I'm not sure if the valves are bent or not. It was 3 teeth off when I got it but with the compression it has I'm not sure about the valves. I've got 2 pairs of bearings for the rods just have to pick them up from a friends house. I'm hoping the guy didn't try to drive it with it out of time or get out and nail it. But when I first heard it run with the down pipe off at the guys house it wasn't ticking but when I went to get it 2 days later he told me it would need to be towed from the noise it was making after he got it all back together

Found my problem number 1 cylinder has no bearing
